His license says cat 3, his points say cat 1. He's got the winning thing so down that I don't even bother following the links or reading the stories. I'd need a ``oh man, got smoked!'' thread to pique my interest. 8)

So much for the USCF following its own upgrade rules eh?

In fairness to Will the only races I ever see him doing are 1-2-3, so I'm not sure what would change. He'd still be crushing everybody in the TTs and be placing in RRs.

But this is BF, and nobody said it's fair.

That's my question. If he's not doing 3 only or 3/4 races, what difference does it really make?

Coming down off the bridge on yesterdays ride I was rolling along at 30mph, with the benefit of a slight tailwind and the momentum from coming off the downhill. Not hard to do for a few blocks.

Thought about Dr. W, and how amazing it is to hold that pace for an hour.

Next time you're doing 30mph, think about the effort it takes, and think how friggin hard it would be to do that, (or slightly above to average 30mph) for an hour.

congrats. I hope your finding your way to age-graded nationals TT this year, I think you need to be at least a 2 to compete in the elite nats though (I could be wrong about this, might be able to do as a 3).

http://www.usacycling.org/rankings/index.php?org=USCF&sex=M&state=&disc=ITT&cat=03&age=

Thats why.. And if you drill down to the races he has done there are several where he races 3/4 and wins when there was a choice of racing 1/2/3 instead... In one race like this he would have been the first 3 (first place) but played with the kiddies in the baby pool instead.

Basically, Will is the David Zabriskie of the northeast and mid-atlantic, and we all want to see him upgrade so he can be signed by Slipstream. I'd don't think people here really feel negatively about him, it's just that he really has outdistanced himself from the competition and it's pretty obvious. I'm not sure about everyone else, but I hope to have the same ``problem'' some day.

how many points does the guy really have on the road? all this sandbagging stuff....it seems his reason for beings are TTs which for all intents and purposes don't count.

As someone who has raced a lot with Will in mass starts, I have to say it doesn't bother me. First off, locally he's only racing P/1/2/3s -- and there are plenty of 3s around here with plenty of points who for whatever reasons haven't upgraded and are still racing 3/4s. He's far from the worst offender in that respect. And in any case, I don't really see how sandbagging affects anyone. If you're worried about upgrading, there isn't a points requirement to advance from 4 to 3 (and Will's presence isn't preventing anyone from getting those pack finishes), and anyone who's going to go from 3 to 2 and win or podium has to be at LEAST as good as he is anyway. And if you're trying to improve your fitness and skills, it's better to race against faster guys. So who's he hurting?

Sure, maybe it's time for him to go up to 2 so he can do some big regional races in 2 only fields, but that means a lot of climbing, a lot more training time, etcetera, for a guy who isn't that interested in mass starts in the first place.

Hmm. Tough crowd. Tough crowd.

He's a beast - no doubt.

But, I don't know about this upgrade thing. I'm putting my request prolly too soon. Just for grins. I want to be a 3 before I win a 4s race. Mainly because I want to get my ass kicked a lot in preparation for Masters.

With your power numbers how about you get out of the kiddie pool and play with the big boys.... You got what it takes no doubt

Yes, we can go into the whole sandbagging thing again, but I guess the post (and my happiness) was not about winning a cat 3 race (don't care that I won cat 3 or otherwise frankly...if I had gotten beaten by 10 guys and still hit 30, I would still be happy) as I don't take pride in that. In fact, I am disappointed that this race is not run as a 1/2/3 as most TTs around here are. I have no interest in out-TTing cat 3s by themselves.

Also, Wfrogge, you know (I hope) as well as I do that power numbers mean nothing when it comes to categories. Otherwise nomad and I could both upgrade to cat 2 based on FTP. Doesn't work that way.

Regardless, I am not trying to start "that" discussion once again. I did wnat to clarify that I was happy not to win a cat 3 race (whooopiddy doo) but that I achieved something that very few people have done, regardless of category.

I'm telling you, we get Saris to develop wireless 2.4 Power Transmission and set it up on Will's BB and wire it into the power grid and our dependence on foreign oil would be solved.
