I now recall that I was bonking a bit at the 71 mile mark too, and I had a bunch of the strawberries. I felt strong the last 30 miles, so I am guessing the strawberries had something to do with that. Maybe I've found my miracle biking food. :thumb:
fresh fruit is a great jolt of energy. i remember one year they had the best nectarines. i probably ate about 10 of them during the ride. i could not get enough of them, it's like my body craved it.
Tim, are you doing the ride in June?

Tim, are you doing the ride in June?
yeah, although i gotta get myself in shape. these little 5 mile rides to and from work just aren't cutting it.
Don't you live basically right next to prospect park?
I think next year I will put a Turkey, Provolone with Mayo hero in the food processor and mill it with 2 cans of V8 and put it in a 1.5 liter Smart Water bottle! Or maybe liquefy a few slices of Brooklyn Pizza and bottle it.
Mmmm we had turkey, cheese and tomato, with mayo, on hero, at the end of the Bloomin Metric. :p

145 done, plus the extra to and from mileage home.
Yeah, ditto on the finish line issues
Pink always looks great against black, NOT. Couldn't see many as they were faded or way to
close to the turn.
Oh well, I can read a cue sheet.

If anyone was less than satisfied here's some others (http://5bbc.org/montauk/feedback.shtml) who've vented their frustrations.
[edit] Whoa - check out some of the damage:
My bike, essentially a BRAND NEW Bianchi Roger suffered some damages. There's a gash on the carbon fork that looks like it went through the finish - I may end up having to replace it if it turns out the carbon weave is compromised. There's a gash in my downtube that looks like it got hit by a pedal - ripped through a sticker and chipped some paint off to the aluminum. This was with such force that my bottle cage (with a full bottle in it) was hanging loose, barely held on by a few threads of the mounting bolts. There's also some paint chipped off one of my track tropouts.
It was in the partially full truck (B-8, i think) driven to Mastic-Shirley, and it all happened in the morning. Why was there no foam padding available? I would have gladly paid extra for the some protection. I'm sure bicycle habitat and other bike shops have tons of those lying around that they wouldn't mind getting rid of for free. I saw bikes in trucks entangled on each other, i.e. pedals oriented in another bike's spokes, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if anyone ended up with broken spokes when they pull the bikes out and separate.
Please equip these trucks to transport the bicycles safely and securely.
I also witnessed the truck parked next to it lower the hydraulics and crush a recumbent bike that was leaning on it. I hope the bike was ok, but that sort of stuff really should NOT happen.
It would seem like they're ill prepared to fully host the thing till the end.
Every time I've done it, I've finished the 145'er by 2 or so and everything was still there. Once it gets past like, 4-5pm, that's when things get hairy.
Maybe the new owners of the 'second class tavern' no longer want to host the event?
