General Cycling Discussion - Won a new bike! what to do?

Well I did my first century on saturday (see other thread to come later) and went to prizegiving and well..... i won a new bike! http://avanti.co.nz/bikes_detail.asp?id=141&t=7 but its too small, and it has the same components as my current bike - SORA! I am wanting an Ultegra bike.

So I was thinking of selling it (retails for 1000, sell it for 700, already had an offer of 700), working my butt off to earn 1600, then sell my current bike for 700 or so and spend the 3000 on a new bike with Ultegra.

Can anyone think of some options?

That's probably the best option. If it really is too small for you, you probably wouldn't get a lot of use out of it anyway. If you sell it now, you'll get more than if you ride it once or twice and sell it later.

I tried to sel l my computer in college, but then it broke.

now, if I had won it , then sold it (I did win it, but did not sell it) I would have been able to get some money out of the deal.
however, I kind of needed that computer to goto cawlidge.
But, if you have a bike, just sell the new one that doesn't work out for you any way.

If you like your current frame, sell the new bike, buy an Ultegra group (or better yet, a Centaur group - mine) and up-grade your current bike. You can do a part at a time or the entire group. And then you can sell your Sora group and a few extra $ to buy new jersey or whatever.

Well my current stead has a very heavy frame, and is slightly too big but is comfortable enough for the mean time. Basically i want to upgrade not only the gruppo, but the frame, the wheels, the fork, everything, so upgrading just the gruppo is out of the equation. I am moving into competitive racing now, I have already started to win races etc, so I want every edge I can get. (I am starting to really go and do some decent training too).

Sell the bike you won and save for the the bike you want!

I don't know the tax laws in New Zealand, but if the bike had been won in the US you would have to come up with the money to pay the taxes by the time taxes were due. (Here, April 15th). A rule of thumb is 1/3 of the list price. In this case it would be $333.00. I don't want to rain on your parade, but it's not something you want jumping out and surprising you at a bad time. (when you don't have the cash)

I have never understood this kind of thing. I have been to races where a prize is given with no consideration to its size. A prize is worthless if it does not fit the winner.

Organizers of bike races should know a bike that will not fit has absolutely NO value to the winner. And I have yet to see an event where the organizers make the swap to one which does fit. Morons!

The same goes to helmets and such. You end up with an extra extra large helmet for an OGRE because the shop sponsoring the prizes could not sell it.

Plain stupid if you ask me. Good luck unloading it.

I think we need to remember here that the organisers of the event may not have had a choice in the size of the frame on the bike that was handed out. Perhaps the shop that provided it issued a "take it or leave it" offer. We have to remember that they didn't actually part with any cash (to my knowledge) to acquirre the bike to use as a prize, so perhaps they weren't in a position to be selective.

I beleive that the Bike prizes were donated directly by Avanti Bicycles.

Organizers of races are making off with the money they get from entry fees (after expenses) and the winners and paying participants win a bunch of shop leftovers that no one would buy as prizes. This was the typical scenario around here when I was spending a fortune entering races.

An average small race event when I was a participant would attract around 100-120 participants @ 35-40$ per racer. So minimum 3500.00 for a days worth of timing which is normally done by volunteers and clean up also done by vols, and prizes are donated by shops, numbers are paid for by a sponsor, the trails were built by vols, Insurance fees are added to entry fees if you are not a licsensed racer of the sanctioning body, etc...

So for a few thousand dollars at a small event to the swell folks who decided to hold it and you don't even win something you can use.

Contact Avanti Bicycles and tell them you have this brand new bike that is not the right size and you would like to swap for the right size. Then ask while they are at it, could they swap out the SORA. Sell your old bike to help pay for the upgrade.

I want to upgrade everything, and I dont want an Avanti...its just TOO common! really every second bike coming in around the 6hr mark at the century was an Avanti. Im gonna sell it.
