Observation log of a cycling newbie:
Today, I had my first contact with the indigenous Cyclist peoples. My camouflage seemed to reassure them that I was no danger to them. My outlandishly colored outer wear matched their own, indicating perhaps a member of their own caste or tribe?
The subjects appeared to be two males: one elder I have named "Graybeard" and one younger named "Skinny-calves".
As I was preparing my gear for a "ride" they performed a "pass by" which arced by me on their way to their vehicle.
Graybeard, as the elder, said 'Hi' as they passed initiating the encounter. I was caught unprepared by this approach as past researchers have mentioned the somewhat shy nature of these gentle, but aloof peoples. Could our matching yellow jackets have inspired such camaraderie?
I observed them as they disassembled their bicycles and decided I would use this opening to attempt more advanced contact.
I mounted my 'bike' and rode toward them displaying my teeth to indicate non-aggression.
They performed the 'check-out' assessing me and my equipment. I carefully observed them and their equipment in response. Finally, after finding me acceptable, they showed their teeth in return.
I spoke to them of their riding experience today. They replied with the ritualistic response: Graybeard said "Any day you can ride is a good day" Skinny-calves added "Especially around here".
I dared not linger after the ritual was complete and I continued on.
Perhaps another day I will have a chance to continue my study of these graceful and reclusive peoples.
