The problem with many modern songs is that, while good, they are songs meant for a band to play, not for a single lone singer. That's why sea shantys work well.

One time I was diving out on Lake Ontario w/ kind of sizable waves and this one guy on the boat wouldn't stop singing that d*mn song. And echoing each line of course. of course...

Have you considered Tibetan Throat Singing? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ktjUHjR6iU) Excellent for one lone singer.

MEN
It's great to be on a ship with men
And sail across the sea-o
We don't know where we'll land or when
But it's great to be with men
'Cause men can sweat and men can stink
And no one seems to care-o
We'll throw the dishes in the sink
And clog the sink with hair-o
Men, men, men, it's a ship filled with men
So batten down the ladies room,
There's no one here but men
There's men above, there's men below
There's men down in the galley
there's Mitch and Dave and Jim and Bob
And one guy we call Sally
Men, men, men, it's ship all filled with men
You'll never have to lift the seat
There's no one here but men
We're men and friends until the end
And none of us are missus
At night we'll sleep in separate beds
And blow each other kisses
Men, men, men, it's a ship all filled with men
So throw your rubbers overboard
There's no one here but men

Oddly enough, I have tried it, and I'm hoping to get better.
Well - hey ya can't forget this guy!
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man,
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man.
I'm strong to the finich
Cause I eats me spinach.
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man.
I'm one tough Gazookus
Which hates all Palookas
Wot ain't on the up and square.
I biffs 'em and buffs 'em
And always out roughs 'em
But none of 'em gets nowhere.
If anyone dares to risk my "Fisk",
It's "Boff" an' it's "Wham" un'erstan'?
So keep "Good Be-hav-or"
That's your one life saver
With Popeye the Sailor Man.
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man,
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man.

I am going to second the rogues gallery album. pick it up. It consists of about 50 tracks of true to form sea shantys/ whaling songs/ pirate music/ sailing/ my lovers out to sea......awesome-ness. I was turned onto it by a friend of mine and i listened to that two disc set for like a month straight (I have a love affair with the ocean). great songs lots of solo stuff and lots of fun. the dude who produced it spent a couple of years researching the songs and got a lot of original documented lyrics. then went around and had all kinds of artist from across the world to sing them.

Yes it is, and actually the Beatles recorded that with Tony Sheridan back in '61. (they were called the Beat Boys on that record)

When I think of sailing songs, I think of Hey Ho Away We Go from Freur.

Rolling Home (http://www.contemplator.com/sea/rolling.html). I have heard it done by a men's chorus and the melody was a bit more defined when they did it.

Me too!!! Had to google a drunken sailer song and ... and had to play it.
I rode home with it. It swirled through my head whilst I deftly dodged traffic ... and jumped some stairs and a minor "wall" (meaning a driveway with a built up 2 ft wall that leads to an open parking lot) with it.
But the best part is --- it's still kind of hanging around as I "hummed" it while I vacuumed - oh - and the best part - that song intermingled with me humming Popeye's "I'm the Sailor Man" song".
hehe - I think it's time to put a CD on :D:D

Pogues
Drunken Boat
The wind was whipping shingle through the windows in the town
A hail of stones across the roof, the slates came raining down
A blade of light upon the spit came sweeping through the roar
With me head inside a barrel and me leg screwed in the floor
Mother pack me bags because I'm off to foreign parts
Don't ask me where I'm going 'cause I'm sure it's off the charts
I'll pin your likeness on the wall right buy my sleeping head
I'll send you cards and letters so you'll know that I'm not dead
By this time in a week I should be far away from home
Trailing fingers through the phosphor or asleep in flowers of foam
From Macao to Acapulco from Havana to Seville
We'll see monoliths and bridges and the Christ up on the hill…
