this is not my post.

"so jorgensen (ryan), voodoo mermaid (sara), mikey barrata and i climbed into the tour van (bruce!) yesterday afternoon with our bikes and headed to the che cafe for a spring break! show. mikey and i were riding around ucsd while jorgensen's band was playing, and while sara was in the bathroom, both their bikes were stolen. 3000 dollars worth of bike in 3 minutes. ryan just got laid off too, so this was extra bad, and sara spent three years finding that merckx peugeot. we waited a ****ING HOUR for campus security to show up--a police report would be crucial for recovering them if they turned up on craigslist or ebay. the car ride back is awful--mikey's getting his heart broken via text, sara's been crying for two hours straight, we're out of beer and ryan looks like he's gonna kill someone. i'm just trying to get everyone to sing bohemian rhapsody, because that's what i do.

we're headed out of dana point when ryan's bandmate calls. their friend shari, who i talked to about bikes at the show, saw her ex-boyfriend unload and hide our bikes literally right down the street from where they live. as soon as he's out of sight, she grabs ryan's bianchi fremont, high-tails it back to her house and stashes it in her room. we're elated, but it's crucial that she get the other bike back. we drop mikey off in huntington beach, hop in a more fuel efficient vehicle and drive all the way back to san diego. when we get there, shari has saved both our bikes. we promise not to fire bomb the mother ****ers house, but assure her that we are going to blow his name up in the cycling community, so we can protect our friends. i got to bed at 7:30 this morning.

SO F**K YOU, SEAN PENDLETON. ROT IN BIKE THIEF HELL.

beware, and remember that anytime you're not on your bike is an opportunity for it to be stolen."

I'm glad they got their bikes back...but what a painful read. I'm also not sure what the point of it was.

obviously to remind you not to deal with anyone named SEAN PENDELTON because he could potentially be selling you stolen parts.

I'm a terrible reader to begin with so I had a hard time comprehending. These bikes were stolen and then recovered. That's all I got.

I came away with: "Next time you're in SD and meet someone named Sean Pendleton, give him 30 seconds to prove that his ex-girlfriend Shari's a lying psycho before you kick him in the nuts."

But I could be reading too much into it.

15 seconds tops.

Moral of the story. Sean Pendleton sucks.

So since the victims filed a report with campus security and they have an eyewitness of this Sean-whoever in possession of the stolen bikes, can we assume that they will press charges and get his ass dragged into court at least? Simply bad-mouthing him in the bike community seems insufficient.

Before the vigilantes hunt down Mr Pendleton and lynch his dog, or something, people should think this through.

How do we know this story isn't total fiction, intended to ruin someone's life through nasty internet lies?

And even if it's true that the bikes were stolen, we only have shari's word that Pendleton had anything to do with it. Isn't it a bit convenient that she just "happened" to meet them around the time their bikes were stolen, and later just "happened" to see her ex-boyfriend (!!!) in possession of the stolen bikes?

And how amazing that BOTH BIKE were in HER possession by the time they got back to San Diego?

Reasonable doubt, people!

No worries, Chip. I'll explain it to you.

My comment was essentially that it seemed a little weird that instead of calling the police, the person decided to create this stream-of-consciousness post that was not only difficult to read, it serves little to no purpose.

Do we really need to tell people not to leave bicycles unlocked and unattended? It's sad that that's the way it is but it's been that way for a long time. I've seen a few threads lately where people leave their bikes and come back to find them gone...and they are SO surprised. Why?

Who the heck is Sean Pendleton? Is he well known for selling bike parts? Does he frequent the boards where the thread was originally posted? OR was this just something for the OP to do while he was coming down from his high?

If the point was to be helpful, perhaps getting to the point would have been a good idea instead of taking us through poor Mikey getting dumped (at least I think that's what it was). Oh and capital letters at the beginning of sentences would have been nice.

1 - i believe the bikes were inside the van at the time and he somehow removed them from it.
2 - there are tons of people who will not go to the police no matter what happens to them because lots of people (myself included) dont like the police.
3 - give me a ration of **** for not capitalizing anything and making these three short statements impossible to read.

Translation of OP for those who found it hard to read:

Ryan, Sara, Mike and "Nar" (my nickname for the narrator) drove to San Diego for a concert in a van with their bikes. Mike and Nar went riding, and while Ryan was performing, and Sara was in the bathroom, Ryan's and Sara's bikes were stolen. They were valuable and unique bikes. Ryan is unemployed, adding to the blow.

They reported it to campus police.

Driving home, they got a call from Ryan's buddy that a woman called shari had seen her ex-boyfriend Sean with the stolen bikes. Meanwhile Mike got a call that his girlfriend was dumping him. They left Mike and the van at home, and went back to San Diego in another car. By the time they got there shari had both bikes, and claimed she had snuck over and gotten them from Sean's place. There are no other witnesses to Sean's involvement.

Nar is now spreading hate for Sean on the internet.

If the situation were the same...probably.

Like I posted, I'm glad these guys got their bikes back. It really doesn't matter to me what kind of bikes they were...or how much they cost. In fact, I like my fixie that I built from the ground up as much as any of my bikes (btw, none of them cost four grand).

The original post was really not much more than a semi-coherent rant and while those are not uncommon in this forum, most of them end up having a lot of sarcastic and flippant posts after them.

I admitted my confusion over the whole thing. I don't know Sean Pendleton and I suspect I will never meet Sean Pendleton. Maybe the guy is well known in the San Diego-Garage Band-Fixed Gear-Broken Hearts Club sub-culture. Maybe he has a shop...that would be good info to know. Maybe this was intended as some sort of public service...it's tough to understand.

Or maybe the guy just wanted us to feel sorry for him. It sucks that he had to spend 4+ hours in his car going back and forth, and waste all that money on gas. But in the end, they got their property back and if they aren't going to press charges against the guy, I guess it's over...and it's a somewhat happy ending.

jorgenson sez

he entire point of this post is to not cause violence towards sean, but rather to make it known what he did and what kind of person he is. he will lose friends and have difficulty gaining friends. we used to do this to guitar thieves in SD. they were isolated and removed from the community. they were too ashamed to come to shows or parties. no one would book their terrible bands at legit venues. no one would come to their stupid shows if they manages to get the booked. nearly all these kids would end up moving out of san diego out of sheer embarrassment with not a drop of blood spilt.

sean doesn't ride. he's a ****ty metal head who was kicked out of his ****ty metal band and dumped by his awesome ex-girlfriends who is now dating my good friend jesse. to clarify, shari is the best friend of jesse's girlfriend and the roommate of jesse. jesse is not a bandmate of mine, though i've done art for his deathmetal band Gutrot.

Not an uncommon attitude, but then why did they go to the campus police? Are they somehow nicer?

Campus police generally can't do squat anyway without involving the regular police.

BF SoCal would turn into a giant support group. Cyber group hugs would abound. Photographs from better times would be posted, memories shared, and a few tears shed.

Naturally, there would be talk of revenge. Roadies would be seen with more than the usual bulges in their cycling-specific shorts. Friends would suspect friends, and strange new alliances would develop. The tension would be felt at every Starbucks from Oceanside to Malibu.

Ultimately, cooler heads would prevail. Instead of lynching the thief, forum participants would settle for generating an eleven-page thread on gun control, reasoning that it would be punishment enough for the thief to have to read it.

None of the people involved would ever get their bikes back. They would keep posting anyway.

Well if this is a completely true story all you need to do is contact local police dept. you say you made a report. Let them know you retrieved the bike and know who took them. You have a police report you have witness to theft from your friend who recovered them.
This would be considered grand theft since they were worth more than 1k. So its a clear cut case for you if all facts are true.
