Saturday me and a friend biked all over north Dallas/addison for about 25 miles during 10:30 - 11:30 and 1:00 - 3:30. I put sunblock on (this was a clear day/not a cloud) and I saw that right when I got home, I had sunburn along my arms pretty bad, heh except for the areas where I rolled the sunblock stick on me - it looks funny:D. Well neways, today 2nd period I went up stairs and had a pounding headrush, which was horrible. Then I felt better. By 9th period about half my right side of my right eye's vision was grainy and flashy as if a light was shining everywhere I saw in that qt. vision. By 10th I was feverish, had chills, fatigue, dizziness, borderling vomiting, and couldn't even hold my head up long. So I left sick. Now after some research I displayed symptoms of sun poisioning (don't know the medical term) but the symptoms I read about occured from right after sun exposure to about 12 hours later. Not 48 hours later. Yikes. I wonder what caused it. This occur to any of yall before?

I get a nasty looking rash on my forearms. At first I thought it was skin cancer, but it fades over the course of a few days and goes away. Big purple splotches. The Dr says it's a histamine reaction though.

It itches when it happens, too.

That happens to me EJ. Everything you said. Sometimes when I fall asleep in the sun, I sorta wake up but I can't really. I can't see right, can't think right and just want to lay back down. But I know if I do that...well - I get scared I won't wake up. So I force myself up to get into some shade or somewhere cool and get some water into me pronto.

Twice. Last and hopefully final was where I was about 25 miles out on a really hot day and my prep for the ride was minimal in the way of liquids. I learned on this ride big time.

By the time I realized the water intake wasn't doing anything or eating anything as well (I wasn't sweating at all! - I knew then something was very wrong!!), and I started to feel sick and nothing I did while on the bike helped so I pulled over onto some guy's lawn and ... barfed. And sat there. Had already gone thru my 2 water bottles so I walked over to the neighbor's house (only guy outside) to ask him for more water and he gave me his hose to fill my bottles.

Yummy, warm hose water - but hey, I've done this many times before on some tours.

Got back on the bike and the eye spots, dizziness and barfiness overwhelmed me so I just got off the bike onto the next lawn - sat under their tree and dumped my water over my head, barfed again. I sat there for quite a while still dumping water over me, at that time I was traveling without a phone (bad tude) as I would have called someone - but as it turned out I sat on this lawn for about an hour, finally cooled off and calmed down and rode home - and man I limped home - it was one slow mo ride home - and I'm sure there was some whimpering on the last 1/2 mile too. Ugh.

HYDRATE!

Went home and dived into bed, closed all the windows - no lights.

Took a couple of days for that headache to go away.

I get kind of the same thing. No purple splotches, but definitely a rash on my hands. It takes a lot of sun for me though. We're talking multiple full days of working on the tractor in full-sun.

I've heard of sun-poisoning. Never had anything like it.

I am beginning to not like summer. The past two summers, before summer's end, it get raised itchy bumps, usually above the sock line ; that don't heal. They go away about four weeks come mid autumn and don't return until like, late July.

That sounds like heat stroke - a bit different from Sun poisoning I think. Similar thing happened to me near the end of a 10K run on a 90+ degree day in Brockport 30 years ago. That was pretty scary.

Growing up near the equator has its benefits I guess!

Probably very close to heat stroke.

More like severe heat exhaustion. HS is often fatal w/o hospitalization.

I had it twice. Had to take steriod shots both times. Now, spf 15 usually takes care of me for the club rides, with spf 30 on my nose.

I've had sun poisoning reall bad when I was younger. Sounds like you might have sun poisoning along with a mild case of heat exhaustion/heat stroke.

The fever, chills, dizziness, mild dementia (i.e. loss of rational speech and thought) are all symptoms of sun poisoning. I had a rash and purple blotches on the exposed areas as well. I literally could not function for two solid days. It was a real bad case.

one time i went kayaing in utah and got absolutely cooked. my legs were swollen up like balloons and it hurt too much to walk. i was basically bedridden for 4 days. my legs continued to blister and swell and drain horrible fluids. i had big blisters on top of blisters. i had minor headaches and dizziness, but nothing major. standing up was unbearable because blood would rush to my legs and i couldnt stand it.

i always get headaches from sun/heat and dehydration. if i get thirsty and go for more than a few minutes without water/gatorade i will end up with headaches i cant cure for a few hours. if i had your symptoms, i would attribute them to dehydration and not sun exposure. of course i have no idea, thats just the way things work for me.

I can relate, that is usually the case with me also just headaches but never quite to the point the op was referring too and really I would rather not reach that point. Being fair skinned, certainly it is best to hydrate and prepare particularly on long rides. Kayaking in Utah must of been nice except for the heat. Otherwise, it seems to often just come down to planning ahead. And that of course is easier said then done.

Anyone ever get sun hemorrhoids?

You white people, how do you cope? :p

BTW, just because I tan super easy doesn't mean I'm reckless about the sun. I use sunscreen and I always ride in a long-sleeve jersey to reduce my sun exposure, even if it's 90 degrees out. If I overheat on a climb I'll pull the sleeves up temporarily, but most importantly I drink plenty of fluids.

We sizzle at the mere thought of the almighty sun disk.

Well I'll tell you what. I brought a 700ml water bottle with me that day to school, but I didn't drink anything for that whole morning (until art at 9th period - around 1:25pm) and I had a donut in the morning. Yeah yeah I know they're bad. I only had one :) Maybe it was dehydration. I usually drink 3L a day, and I've gone all day without drinking before, but maybe sunburn demands higher water consumption. Thoughts?

The easy way to think about this is the same way to be polite.

Always introduce your friends first, then yourself. This makes "Saturday me and a friend biked all over north Dallas/addison for about 25 miles" sound a bit impolite.

Next, get selfish and remove yourself from the conversation and see if it still makes sense. For example, would you ever say, "Saturday me biked all over north Dallas/addison for about 25 miles". No, you wouldn't. You'd say, "Saturday a friend and I biked all over north Dallas/addison for about 25 miles" because it makes sense either way.

See how easy grammar is? :p

I got a really bad sunburn on my lower legs and feet at the beach a few years ago. That area turned purplish and hurt terribly, with blisters and suppurations. Pain felt like it went straight to the bone. Wife didn't get it and insisted I join everyone to play miniature golf that night. I actually did pretty well, but was in agony by the time we got back to the room. I told her that next time I say I can't/shouldn't go somewhere she needs to accept it and move on.
