Hi guys,

Recently many of my mates have build really light smallwheelers (7kg range) so I tried to reduce some grams from mine. I gave up 32H capreo wheelset and got a japanese AM5 406 lightweight wheelset. As I cannot use 9-26T cassette on standard hubs, I fitted TA 60T chainring instead.

This is the AM5 wheelset from japanese bicycle brand 'Tyrell'. It uses AM classic hubs and bladed spokes, and it only weighs 1147g. They sell even lighter wheelset, AM7, which only weighs 970g!

I changed the nipples to red ones. Shown is the complete wheelset w/ QR and velplugs (which act as rim tape)

These are TA alize 60/42T chainrings. They actually shift reasonably well!

Complete bike. Current setup weighs 8.3kg (sans pedals) and I'm planning to swap handlebars, saddles, tubes to make it under 8.0kg.

Raxel,
Yet another lovely machine. I'd still go for that Birdy from a while back, but yours is very cool. Any Dahon owners in your circle of friends (I think you'd probably all have fun with a Mu SL...or an XXV if you're feeling really rich)?

Yes, all of its components are dura ace ones. (9-speed secondhanded ones I've got cheap on ebay)

And the wheelset is sold by tyrell bike local dealer here. Tyrell bike makes some incredible components including scandium and titanium frameset, carbon monocoque forks, and lightweight wheelsets.
You can visit their homepage here (Japanese) http://tyrellbike.com/
AM5 wheelset's retail price is around $400, but I happened to get a mint one at nice price.

Many of my mates are seriously train/race with their smallwheeler bike. Many races (especially hill climbing races) have dedicated smallwheeler section too. Recently there was a hill climbing event was held in mt. Fuji in japan. One of my mate participated and won at the smallwheeler section with his 7kg Tyrell scandium bike.

I'll post some tyrell bikes next time. Be prepared!

Raxel, nice!

But I know for a fact that you'll save some weight if you remove those Zefal V Kaps and put the plastic Presta caps back on. ;)

(that said, I'll join you in the OCP camp and keep mine on for now too!)

Tyrell needs an English language webstore... mmmm

Hello Raxel. I liked the photos you posted a while back and like this bike too.

Was your friend's winning time faster than the winning time of the bikes with large wheels?
