So, out there in your weekend crits and road races, and group rides do you think there are any guys taking performance enhancing substances? Sometimes I look and wonder.....

I would just bet there are. Our culture believes that performance enhancement can be had by spending money on supplements and drugs.

Most of these drugs carry substantial health risks. If I were a professional athelete and taking some of this stuff would move me from ordinary to top tier, well it might be worth the adverse effects.

But as a recreational rider, it just does not make any kind of sense at all. I can get a considerable amount of performance enhancement by training and conditioning. So I will live with that.

Often, I also look...wonder...and come to the conclusion that some are talented people who train intelligently. A few, however, are about as clean as a public urinal.

Because of the lifting I do, I spend more time than most in the weight room. Also, I used to date this gal who went out with a state-level winning bodybuilder; and she was quite informative on the tricks the dopers use. Now days, it's much more subtle than severe acne or gynecomastia.

Many of these guys have big egos and deep pockets (or at least an excellent credit rating). Think about it: after plunking down serious dollars on bikes, coaches, nutritionists, etc. you still can't take that final sprint or that hill. To make things worse, you get out-powered by guys like me that roll in to the group ride with a smirk, Salsa frame, and neuvation clinchers (how dare someone not pimping the latest carbon ride sprint so well!). At that point, a trip to a very costly, very exclusive, and very discreet "longevity" specialist is just one or two rationalizations away.

(these clowns still can't out sprint me)

For every individual who laments the Clemens or the Bonds of the world, there's got to be at least one that thinks "damn - I need to get my hands on that candy." Smart money says those who decry and those who covet are often one and the same.

And, the last I checked, a group ride and most amateur races do not test.

Do I use? Hell no. I've seen the inside of a hospital (for other reasons) far too often. I've seen the extreme cases - the guys in their 30's who can no longer produce a normal amount of testosterone. And even if such scenarios are avoidable, I see improving as a clean athlete a daily chess match; the cerebral aspect is every bit as interesting as the physical.

Yeah, I'm doping so I can hopefully win a prime and get a new waterbottle - or maybe even win a race and have a nice plastic trophy to impress the world with!

About a year ago, we had a new rider move into town and joined our weekly club rides. A nice guy and good cyclist. During one of the rides, we got to chatting about our ages, families, and training/racing. He started talking about his training and some of the suppliments he's been taking. This is when he mentioned testosterone. He asked if I've ever taken it, then began to tell me that he and a number of his racing buddies would take it  After I told him that I've never taken anything, he starts to ask me if I wanted to try it. He apparently had some at home which he got from his doc. I couldn't believe what I was hearing from this guy. He was a cool guy that I would never guess to be doping. He was a Cat 2 or 3, I can't remember, but his reasoning was that he needed to take it to keep up w/ the younger guys. He was in his mid- 30's. I'm not sure what happened to him, but he no longer rides w/ us

So to answer your question, there are dopers in your local RR's and crits.

^^^^^^^

Rather befitting: discussion on an ugly practice finished with a truly ugly image.

And the circle of perversion is complete.

Chip, it's utterly pathetic, but it does happen at the lower cats. It's the proverbial slippery slope meets money and ego.

Yep, that about covers it. Just another reason to hate humans in general - we're a sorry lot.

Now, I'll cop to taking Depotestosterone, but it is therapeutic. I have a Pituitary disorder and it simply keeps me at a normal level in my body. :p

On the flip side, I have a therapeutic waver for it as well. ;) I'm not going to take extra though because I don't want to have the adverse side effects like having the boys shrink and grow Moobs.

Yes ... and they are, IMHO, fools. However, it's their body.

I've said it before, and those here who have raced with me will attest, if you need drugs (or even strong coffee) to beat me, you suck beyond imagination.

How about miracles...which is pretty much what I need to beat anyone. My suckiness is beyond description!

Given the fact that you can go to just about any general practitioner and take a questionnaire full of leading questions in an attempt to self diagnose for ADHD, i would be surprised if a lot aren't using adderall or some other amphetamine salt.

I have been looking at flavenols and herbs. They have a wide variety of effects.
Occasionally something like moderating estrogen dumps me into a steroid website.

That's different.
