Fifty Plus (50+) - Where to buy Garmin 305 Edge

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I am looking to buy a Garmin 305. Where will I find the best price? And what should I look for?
I just found a 305 Edge with HR, Speed, and Cadence at Heart Rate Monitors USA for $299.99. Is that a good deal?

I didn't find out about him until after I bought mine, but geoman on ebay had a great rep around here. I just looked around over there and didn't see him. Search this site to see some posts about him. Guess he's still around.
Looks like its a little over $200 on ebay from others.
If you do get one on ebay, check that the warranty applies. I'm pretty sure geoman said Garmin would honor warranty on his. I love my Garmin, but it's been back three times for warranty repairs.

Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=garmin+edge+305&x=0&y=0)is your friend. Click on the "click here to see price" link- I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I got one several weeks ago from Amazon (at this price) and I'm as happy as a clam.

Geoman is good for price. But if your unit dies after a month, don't expect any help from him. You'll be dealing with Garmin. Not a bad thing, they have good customer service.
Geoman is strictly sales only. He will ignore your emails if you have problems, then email you, "glad it worked out" when you let him know that garmin is honoring the warranty. BTW, when I told garmin who I bought it from, they replied, "We are not familiar with them."
Will all this be necessary? Just so you know, I am on my third Garmin 305, in less than a year.

Hmmm, I'm sorry to hear this kind of response... We try very hard and spend alot of time with clients over one and two years helping them derive as much as they can with their Edge purchases. True!
Ignore messages? That's absolutely the last thing we ever intend to do. Admittedly, the volume of emails we receive is very high and there are things like spam blockers, filters, and the like. Having sold somewhere near 7,000 Edge 305's, it's not impossible that we didn't receive a message from someone. Email does have its inherent shortcomings... That being said, our customer feedback (http://www.geomangear.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=1) constantly serves as a barometer to us on how we're doing. But, we're concerned to hear comments like the above and we'll continue to proactively strive to make your GeoMan experience a great one.
Garmin lays out the service process. There are times when a customer has to deal directly with the manufacturer. Frankly, it gives the manufacturer instant feedback on any trouble issues that arise over time and let's them develop solutions to problems faster.
One thing is certain, the vast majority of people love their Edges and trust Garmin for great service. We strive for that kind of recognition.
Thanks for an honest post. We're on it.

I've not had any problems with my Edge, but when I wanted to apply for the rebate last year & couldn't find my receipt, Geoman responed immediately to my e-mail requesting that he e-mail me a copy. Original purchase was smooth & prompt as well.

:)As I mentioned, my Garmin has been back to the factory in Kansas for repair 3 times. IMO Garmin has just about the best service of any company I've ever dealt with.
When it took water in a rainstorm, they sent me a new head and cadence unit when I only returned the head for repair.
There was never a question about whether they would warranty the repair when I freely admitted I dropped the unit on concrete.
And the longest they ever took to return the unit, it was back in my hands 8 days from the time I dropped it in the mail, without overnight shipping.

I had a plus service with Geoman, and would buy from him again. When there was a problem with it being delivered to me he went the extra mile and found out where I worked and called me to make sure that he had the correct address. I cant remember if it was ups for fedx that delivered but they had contacted him and said that it was a incorrect address. He promptly contacted them and it was delivered promptly. Also he had the best price.

Ask these questions prior to your purchase:
If my Garmin dies within one month of purchasing the unit, will you swap a brand new unit for me? What about three months? Six months?
What is the failure rate of these devices?
What is the failure mode of these devices?
Also, read the MotionBased forums on the garmin 305:
http://forums.motionbased.com/smf/index.php?board=55.0
Also...If you are using the unit to navigate, always carry a back up map.
Good luck.
