Classic & Vintage - Another Prugnat Paramount

I got this frame months ago on eBay; I believe it was the subject of some thread here but I can't find it.
Anyways, here's some pics of it before I figure out what to do with it.

Fork has a P stamped on the back of the steerer tube, no other markings

It appears from the scratches on the paint to have had clamp-on downtube shifters but no stop is on the frame.

I was reminded by Cuda's Paramount of this frame hanging in the garage. I don't know what exactly to do with it. Should I build it up using Rivendell or Velo-Orange new parts, try to put together a group of period correct parts(1970, right?), or put 2008 Dura-Ace or Record all over it?

It definitely will be getting a new paintjob. I see no chrome in any of the chips and scratches on the frame and I doubt the gold is the original paint since the non-original fork and the included frame pump are also painted the same gold.

I like it, nice frame.

The rack is cool too. Since the original fork is missing I would build it up as a rider. So if 2008 record suits you why not go for it, the only worry is spreading the triangle.

There is a GIOS super record on ebay that has had the shifter bosses removed and has DT barrel adjusters added... so people do mod their favorite classics to modern components and if you love a frame you might as well. Luckily I have a 1992 Marinoni that was built with 130 spacing and is a classic lugged construction with columbus SP, it will always have a modern group on it.

Hmmm.....not sure I'd do a repaint....but if you do, I'd go with campus green.

As far as what group to use, either way, it's gonna cost a bundle to do it up right....I guess it depends on what type of riding you'll be doing. I'd be very tempted to put on new Campy or Dura-Ace. :)

I do a lot of road riding but the fixie gets a good workout, too. I also commute a couple of times a week on the fixie but descending the hills is no fun. But don't worry, I won't be converting the Paramount to ss/fg. Probably go with 105 or Centaur; maybe some 28s for tires and leave the rack on there.

The frame has a LOT of scratches, scrapes, nicks, etc. and I don't like the gold. It looks a lot better in the pics than it does in person, trust me. Campus Green sounds nice.

Can anyone recommend a fork that would look a bit more appropriate? That Cinelli type fork just looks wrong; the bike needs a crown fork. I checked Waterford and they want over $300 for a fork. That's not going to happen. eBay hasn't had anything in months of lurking.

I wouldn't say that - I dare say it looks rather nice with this frame. Don't know why, but it does.

What size is it??

I agree with kurt, I like the look. I would have no problem with running this fixed, why not? There are no braze ons... it's ideal.... but new centaur would be sweet.

I don't know when Paramount used those lugs, but the pump peg and brake cable guides look earlier than the seat tube stripes or the Reynolds sticker. And what fork crown was used with those lugs? Doesn't look ready for a repaint, I'd throw it together and ride it.

Prugnats were from '67-70, IIRC. Peg might have been added, but brake cable guides are original - same TT cable stop treatment on my '61 P-12 and '70 P-13.

Fork isn't original, as mentioned earlier. I believe it was speculated to have come from a Raleigh Professional, correct?

The brake cable guides on the underside of the top-tube are a nice touch. Was surprised to hear it's original as I associate that style on bikes from the 80's. That's advance! What style Prugnats are those?

I can break that serial number down for you. "C" is the month code, they went sequentially (skipping I so as not to be confused with 1) so A=January, B= February, C=March, and so on. The second digit is the year code, which stands for the last digit in the year it was made. I believe something like 66-69 all used single digit year codes and they switched to double digit year codes in 1970. Since yours is a 7 so it was made in 1967. The last three is the nth frame made that month, yours was the 20th.

So yeah, 20th frame made in March of 1967. :)

Sorry to disagree, but the date should be decoded: C=March, 70=1970, 20=20th frame built in March of that year. If it had been the 20th frame built in 1967, the serial number would read, "C720" which would be simular to my 1966P-13 Paramount which reads "F694."
