Hi All,

I'd like to overhaul my Mavic Classic Elite hubs and freewheel. Looking through the Barnett manuals above, I've got no clue which kind of hub I have. I also can't find diddly on the Mavic web site.

Any suggestions for procedure, or starting point?

TIA

Mavic usually includes some special tools required to open up their hubs when you buy the wheelsets from them. Your LBS should have them. Besides that (you can use a standard spanner wrench) they're pretty basic.

I am pretty sure that the Classic elites are a sealed bearing hub which means that there really is no need for overhauling them unless there is play in the bearings that cannot be eliminated using the adjusting ring with the holes in it. When that happens then you get some new sealed bearings (cartridge bearings) and you pop the old ones out and the new ones in. Only costs a few bucks for the bearings although it has been my experience that when those bearings are worn out you should also replace the freehub body (which also has its own bearing) on a Mavic hub because the bushing is likely worn and that causes it to refuse to coast once the new bearings are in and that aint fun. The freehub body will likely run you about 45 or 50 dollars at your lbs which is the only place you can likely get it.

Yikes! I'm contemplating overhaul for a couple of reasons...
(1) just got the bike brand new this summer, but it is a 2000 model.
(2) immediately had free hub overhauled because it was way to heavy
(3) now free hub is a little noisy and rear wheel doesn't seem to spin anywhere near as well as I'd like.

Maybe I just need to re do the free hub mechanism?

Thanks for the input!
