Classic & Vintage - old skool pinarello

hi, new to the forum.

this is my old school pinarello, i built it in 1984 (i think).

just pulled it out of about 10 years hibernation (marriage, kids, gut) and i'm riding again.

haven't decided if i'm going to update it or replace it.

columbus SL frame (with famous pinarello ghosting decals)
campy super record derailleurs
campy super record crank
modolo brakes (i have the original levers)
suntour superbe pro pedals (very light - the only japanese thing on the bike)
super record hubs with mavic rims
3ttt post
concor profile saddle

its kinda a mix match of components but i was going for lightness at the time. the total bike as shown is about 18lbs.

i've got the replacement decals and should be applying those this weekend.
the frame has a very unique Gun-Metal Blue factory color, i haven't seen it anywhere else.

i put speedplay pedals on it a few days ago and may do more updating but i think it will look funny with zipp wheels and carbon cranks. what do you guys think?

any advice would be appreciated.

Personally I would just clean it up, lube and adjust and ride it. You might find after being off the bike for a decade you might look for a wider range freewheel, a 13-26 or 28, 7 speed freewheel would work and make your re-birth a little easier.

wow, nice whip! I would ride it the way it is, oh wait, no, I'd put the modolo levers back on and ride it the way it is. How do you plan on removing old decals/applying new decals?

don't change ANYTHING on it at all. leave it just as it is and simply adjust/lubricate/grease the parts.
decals should be saved for when you have it professionally repainted they can be buried beneath the final clearcoat.

yes the gearing is tight, setup for racing. the cog is a mallard and i believe it was a rare magnesium model (again for lightness) so i don't want to change it. i realize its best to keep the bike correct for its period.

i rode it last weekend with new pedals and carbon shoes, new gearing would make my job easier and that wouldn't be fair. :o

you forgot to point out the OMAS headset and the gold plating on the SR parts (very trick, but wearing away now). What I'd do: replace calipers and levers with Modolo Pros, replace FW with anything more durable than magnesium (good Lord, that's insane!)...clean it, lube it and ride it proudly.

To swap out a freewheel is fairly simple and a 6 or 7 speed wider range cluster is totally within reason for the period. When you want to put on your Maillard unobtanium for a Sunday show n' shine just swap it back in. I would put the Modolo levers back on also. If the hoods are dried out you can get NOS hoods from a dealer that orders from EuroAsia Importers.

I have lots of vintage pedals and clips but I also ride my vintage bikes with Sidi cross shoes and Egg Beater pedals because I haven't found a nice pair of vintage shoes and clips that fit me well. Tubulars, friction shifting and 1, 3, 5, 6 or 7 rear gears is enough work for me.

I'd buy another bike and keep that one for occasionals.

Modolo Kronos levers? serious weight weenie stuff for it's era/age.
I'm guessing Mavic Gel280 or 330 rims? If they're 280's I'd put on
a new set of wheels and keep the lightweights for a show type day.
I agree that Modolo Pro or Master Pro brake calipers are the way to go.

They sorta look like cheepo Dia-Compes to me... super uncomfortable with those half hoods, I had them on a bike, they were gone real quick.. The bike is definitely A mix of some good stuff though...

OP, I'll take the original pedals off your hands if you don't want em anymore.

i just got the decal set from cyclomondo in australia, good quality but the down tube decal is slightly undersized. i'll document the process in a different thread if anyone is interested.
