I was told by this guy at the LBS that you do NOT lubricate the cassette, cog and the crank, ONLY the chain and the pivots of the transmission get lubricated, is this accurate? He added that lubrication on these parts will only attract grime and dirt to them.
True or false?

True, totally true. The biggest problem to lubing your chain is finding a lube you like that doesn't attract dirt, hence the popularity of waxes.
Your LBS guy is a wise man.

But....how about using White Lightning or the Race Day stuuf on the cassstte? Do those things work on the sprockets. cogs, etc?

Why do you want to lubricate the cassette? It has no moving parts. You lubricate the chain to reduce its internal friction as it moves over the teeth of the gears. You lubricate the bearings or bushings of the derailleur pulleys to reduce their internal friction, and the deraillleur pivots so that the gear changes remain smooth. What purpose would lubricating the cassette serve, other than to cause the cogs to get dirty at a faster rate? If you mean lubing the freehub assembly, that is a different story, and there are many theories about wether or not you shuld introduce any lubricants into the rachet mechnism or not, and which lubricants you should use, etc. If you do decide that it is a good idea, wax based lubes would be a last resort, sinc ethe fact that they solidify would hamper the normal operation of the freehub mechanism.

on the advice of my stepfather, when i was around 13, i slobbed a big thing of grease onto my cogs. I have never accumulated a thorough caking of foul dirt faster!
