Classic & Vintage - help identify a masi frame?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi,
tonight, i pulled the Masi frame from the garage rafters. I am sure it has been up there 20 years. I had forgotten how friggin' light that thing was!
I bought it stripped of paint and decals back in my college days. It was still a fun ride. Now, I am trying to figure out what exactly it is. It's 58 cm but the SN looks like M029.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Peter

There was a link on this site to an article by a Mr. Brian Baylis that helped identify the vintage of the frame. It was an interesting article!
So, I looked more closely at the frame last night. On the bottom bracket, it clearly has MC29 as a SN, the #58 at the top of the bottom bracket, a 6 point star (like a Star of David) after the SN and then a bit lower, the marking 9+.
Does any of this identify it further. If i can come up with a digital camera, i will try to take some detailed shots.
Thanks!
Peter
Peter,
What does the fork crown look like? 2 plates or a
box? it will help ID the bike.
I'd say its 1st run of California Masi that went to
general public.
You should post to CR list, Brian B and a few others
will want to add your bike to their list to verify serial numbers etc.

Mail the bike to me and I'll let you know when I have a chance!

I have a Masi I bought from Masi in Milan 6-70. It's a 57 cm frame and the SN (if that's what it is ) is M57 This looks like a size and not a SN
Thomas Upton
MC29 would signify Masi California not sure about the
frame number tho (the 29). The older Italian Masi's
serial number of M57 signifies the frame was built in
Milano.

Hi
I bought my Masi Gran Criterium in 84, I was told it was built in Italy but don't know for sure
below the big M on the bottom bracket is "M56" which signifies the frame size, as it is a 56cm frame
above the big M is a serial number (me thinks) "4209"
mine was the bright red with super record, currently restoring
Hope this helps you

PETER! One good picture of the serial # and bottom bracket shell will tell us what we need to know... I'd love to see pictures of the whole frame!!
Does the BB shell have the big "M" cutout, or slots or holes? I think the "M" cutout goes back to about '72-'73, but I could be a little off there. The marking you see that looks like 9+ is possibly +GF+. Could be that you have a missing link frame... The actual 29th frame out of Carlsbad. If so, you have a very cool, VERY early California Masi frame!
No doubt that Gian numbered the "second batch" of CA Masi frames with the MC, and then the serial #. The very first batch of 25 were numbered starting with 1S instead of MC... PICTURES PLEASE :)

Peter, You can save yourself the hassle of restoration, and assist me on my path to enlightenment if you would sell it to me. $50.00 plus shipping out to be reasonable for an old pile of steel shouldn't it?
