Who makes a good wood chipper/shredder for residential use? This is something I would use at least once every other month so I figured it'll be cheaper to buy than rent.
I would like to find something locally where I can purchase and pick up.
All this yard work is taking time away from my riding.

Thanks.

Are you sure it's cheaper to buy? I'll check with my landscaping staff tomorrow but I'm pretty sure that those are high maintenance pieces of equipment.

How big are the pieces you need to mulch? I have a leaf blower that doubles as a mulcher. It's good enough for twigs and small branches but I wouldn't want to use it for anything too big.

EDIT - This is basically what I have http://www.toro.com/home/yardtools/blowervacs/51591.html

^^^ lol

Thanks guys, for the links and suggestions.
What I need is something that can chip 2" branches, palm leaves, dead shrubs, weeds and all. I figured I'll be looking at a some gas powered portable unit on wheels.

roadfix,
Question: Do you want to chip it because you'll use the chips/mulch in your yard, or do you want to chip thinking it's easier to haul the stuff away??

My landscaper said to stay away from Yard Machines brand at Home Depot. He said if you go to HD or Lowes, look for a Toro or Troy Built and get the biggest engine available. We try to get Hondas over Briggs and Stratton on power equipment.

Ah, well, then it might be worth it. Last year, I cleared my side yard down to dirt. I rented a 6" industrial chipper (yeah right, but not even close) to clear all the brush cuttings. It was a major pita. Two guys took 3 hrs (6 manhours) to only chip third of the pile. I returned chipper and rented a trailer. One guy took 2 more hrs to clear out the remaining 2/3 of the pile by stomping into trailer.

But if you really want the chips, then that's different. Good luck! Personally, I think the machines you buy are wimpy. They must be really bad if the 6" monster one was that much of a pain.

For me, it's still a toss up between roadfix and you Alice. But the roadfix's interest in a wood chipper is starting to tip the scales. (Is that how you make a possessive out of a name that ends in "x"? Nectar of the Gods clouds my mind.)

Nice machines, but not cheap.

Chipper deaths aren't uncommon. I remember one a few years ago where the only reason we knew what happened was because of the little pieces of orange plastic in the back of the truck.

When my chainsaw and machete wear out I'll hire the beaver...:D

Meanwhile, I'm kind of interested in the 10ph Troy Bilt chipper.
