Mountain Biking - SS 29er build

I bought a Van Dessel Ramble Tamble frame to build up as a single speed hard tail 29er. I commute on my fixed gear, but I've not tried SS on a trail, and the big wheels will be new to me, too.

I've got some parts arriving from Pricepoint tomorrow. I went with a Reba fork and Truvativ SS crankset.

I talked with Pricepoint and a LBS, and both said the fork crown shouldn't need to be faced. Is that typical for a new suspended fork? If I can just cut it and install the star nut, I will be happy.

thats all I ever do. Just make sure the cut is square and you sand /grind/ buff afterwards

Quick update after installing crankset, post, wheels, and fork (temporarily). I tried heating the race in the oven, but must not have left it in there long enough. I ended up using a PVC pipe and a hammer.

Just read that the cog won't work with 9 speed chains, which sucks, since I have a bunch of those laying around. Still need to choose a handlebar, install brakes, and finish up the fork.

Took a week to travel back east to visit family. Got home and some more parts were waiting. Should have it all done tomorrow. Man, it's going to be 96F!

There is interference between the rear caliper (Juicy 7) and the frame. I can't move the caliper outboard enough to keep the rotor from rubbing on the outer pad. Not sure what to do at this point. Van Dessel shows they build the bike with Juicy 3s, so it should work.

What kind of shims are those?

Jagwire (right-click, properties)

I ended up using a Dremel tool to remove some material from the caliper body. It doesn't make me happy, but it's working so far. Next up is the fork.

Finished it up tonight. Test ride around the neighborhood was interesting. Very high up. The reach is 3" shorter than my K2 MTB. Very odd. I like the hard tail aspect. I'll give it a try on some trails tomorrow. The EBB makes dialing in the chain very easy.

Nice ... very nice. I'll be interested to hear how it rides on single track. Hey, how about a better pic? :)

Just to cover the bases, I used a pipe cutter for the fork, and an install tool for the star nut. Both acquired from Pricepoint. Did I mention I like Pricepoint :)?

I rode to the gym and back. The gearing is stupid low for around town. No time today to try it on a trail. I think I'm going to get a setback seatpost.
