Endless fun? Is that a promise?:)
I would do this ride, but it looks too hard for me!
Easier to stop by the restaurant for a drink or meal...that I know I can do...:)

alone? yes. with slow fatties? yes. But definitely not with you dudes! I'd get dropped instantly.
Have fun and don't forget to show your mom some love.

It doesn't matter how "slow" anyone is. Everyone is welcome. If you're gonna take a long time, there is a good chance you'll be showing up at the village as we're on our way back from the ski lifts. Thats what Don did last time, and rather than going up to the lifts, he stopped at the village and ate with us.
So no excuses.

Listen to Enzo Alice!
You can do it! Nothing too steep on this ride as long as you delete the "SKI LIFT" section from your route sheet. It's an "all good" ride. Yeah, there's quite a bit of climbing, but get over it . . . climbing is good for you!
I'll be there too, but starting from Boulder Springs with a bunch of other Rebels. You can start with us if you prefer, 8:00 AM start from Boulder Springs. See details at this link:

Hope to see everyone at The Village!
Rick / OCRR
We have plans to ride up to the village on Saturday, there'll be 4 or 5 of us, some fast, some slow. Sorry to hijack your thread, but maybe if some can't make it on Sunday (Mother's day) maybe some can make the Saturday ride. We're leaving from the base of GMR at 8:00 if anyone wants to join us.

Hi Ralph,
I'll be up there Sat. too, so maybe I'll see you. Look for a guy on a Ti GT wearing the bikeforums.net 50+ jersey. That would be me.
I'll look for someone riding a '55 Roubaix!

I was just over at the 50+ site and found the jersey thread...still trying to decide if I want one. You should be easy to spot, I'll try to keep an eye out for you. On the way out, I'll more than likely be on my own, but coming back there should be 4 or 5 of us more or less together.
Here's a pic of my legs...you can miss them.:rolleyes:http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p300/rdt333/legs.jpg
Sorry, I couldn't resist. I looked for a pic of myself, but that's all I could find. I will have on those bibs though.:D

Lovely Day on the Mountain Alice!
Thanks for asking! We had 9 Rebels starting from Boulder Springs, including 2 GMR Virgins. Doug and Andrew were the first ones to The Village, then Maria, Tito, Fernando, Arthur and David Wu all pretty much at the same time.
Rich (one of the GMR Virgins) was next, followed by myself and Loretta (the other GMR Virgin) about half an hour later.
Started in over-cast near-fog conditions (felt like mid-50's), then climbed up above the clouds into brilliant sunshine, much warmer temps. I stayed with Loretta since I didn't want to leave her alone on her first time up GMR. David and Maria stayed together too, with (I think) Arthur and Tito trailing behind.
Something different: We saw three crashed cars (Civic V-Tec, VW Golf, one unidentified . . . could have been a Taurus) which the sherrif's men told us were left over from a "race" on GMR the prev. night.
Plus, on the way back to Glendora, Loretta and I rode through a swarm of bees for maybe 30 yards or so, but fortunately no stings! Kind of un-nerving though; hundreds of bees!
Lots of flowers out, nice temps once above the clouds, beautiful skies, views of the mountain ranges, and not too many motorcycles. We had breakfast at The Village (photos on the Rebel website), with particularly rave reveiws for the blueberry pancakes!
We missed you Alice; you would have had a wonderful time. Maybe next time!

Eager for a reason to test out a good climb on my month old new bike, I took up Enzo's offer to ride up Mt. Baldy yesterday. I thought about joining one of the two groups, but the early (cold) start times for both weren't to my liking, so I opted for a solo ride up at a later time, thinking I'd maybe join up with them at the village and ride down together. I chose the Glendora road option and left at 10:10, with the fog cover just beginning to break up. Sweet, sweet road and climb! A lot of up, but not too steep. I did have a wierd hammy cramp issue at the very beginning, which was surprising considering I never get leg cramps, and wouldn't think I'd have that problem at the very beginning. I consciously changed my pedal stroke to use other muscles until my legs settled down. Maybe it was the excitement. By mile 10 all was fine leg-wise.
The sights and smells were spectacular! Early on I also opted to shut off the mp3 player and listen to the quiet and sounds of these desert mountains. Being able to hear oncoming car and cycle traffic is a safety issue as well. I stopped around mile 12 for a nature call, plus refill my water bottles in a trickling spring from the hills above. As I was about to remount, the AAA flatbed truck carrying two cars passed me on the way down. That explained all the ranger and sheriff car action I had been witnessing. From the looks of the cars I couldn't tell if they were wrecked or not, as they didn't appear mangled. Passing by the scene of the accident (stone wall bashed in), I saw a white car still down over the hill maybe 50 feet from the top. How it came to a stop on such a steep hillside was a mystery. Lucky driver. And idiot for racing on that road.
A short while later I was passed by Enzo and his gang on their way down, and a little while later by the OC group. No rest for the weary! You all must have wolfed down your meal and took off! When I got to the village around 1:10pm (2:25 ride time), I roamed around a bit looking at the sights, then had a leisurely beer, burger and fries lunch while chatting with the wait staff at the lodge, asking the usual dumb questions like how much snow they get in the winter. At less than 5000 feet in elevation, the answer is just a few snow storms per winter, but not anywhere near like what they get higher up. Then I was given a tour of the lodge property (includes a public swimming pool and cabins for rent) with a friendly resident who religiously rides her bike from the village up to the peak (7800 ft). At 60 y.o., she was proud of her level of fitness and even had me feel her legs. Did anyone else get to feel a granny's legs while you were there? I didn't think so.
I left the village at 2:35. On my way back I also rode through a swarm of bees, and got stung on the bridge of my nose! A short while later I rode through another swarm, and even though I didn't get stung that time, it freaked me out big time! While stopping to check if any were lodged in my helmet, I could hear bees buzzing along the hillside beside me and had a moment of panic thinking a swarm was about to engulf me. Time to gooo! The remainder of the ride down was in perfect sunbathed mid 70's temps. I reached my car at 4pm.
Fitness-wise, all my weeks and months of riding throughout the Santa Monicas have paid off, but I was still quite surprised at how my legs didn't want to cooperate on the few inclines on the way down. Partly psychological, no doubt. Overall, what a wonderful journey! To those of you hesitant, I implore you to make plans to ride up that mountain! If Granny can do it, so can you!

What time were those pics taken? We must have been a little bit ahead of it coming back, because the idiot sheriff in the black and white Suburban came around a corner coming at us at quite a high rate of speed. I was behind my buddies by a hundred or so yards and it scared me. I never saw that scene, and I don't think I would have missed it.

Arthur took this shot on the way out, and we started at 8:00 AM, so my guess-timate time for this shot would be 9:15 - 9:30 AM. I saw the Sherrif's Suburban a couple of times on the road, but he was driving slow, and staying in his lane whenever we went past him (once in each direction, as I recall).
Not sure when you got to The Village, but we spent probably an hour eating breakfast (outside back patio of the Lodge), drinking coffee and talking, so you could have been there and gone before we came out again.
