Anybody race at the Encino Velodrome? I'm thinking about checking it out this summer and maybe taking one of their beginner classes, or maybe showing up to open practice and try to stay out of peoples way. I've never ridden a track bike before but I think you can rent them for $5. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Comments/advice welcome. How radically different is track sizing from road sizing? I would imagine you would go towards the lower end of your sizing for a more radical drop, but i'm not really worried about that... (I ride a 58cm-60cm road frame now) Just wondering what kind of rentals they offer.

It's cheap, it's laid back, it's a great ride on a nice day.

Sizing is pretty much the same as for road. I ride 56 for both, and have things set up almost the same. I haven't dealt with the rentals at Encino in ages, but I'd guess they have something that will fit you.

ADT has bikes up to at least 58-- I can't remember if I've seen a 60 there.

I'm pretty sure you need a USAC license to show up on the open practice day at Encino. Not required for the beginner's class.

Excellent. Thank you for the replies. I'm going to go to the beginners clinic on may 31st. Should be fun!

One more thing, should I call to register for the clinic or is it cool if I just show up?

I'm pretty sure you need a USAC license to show up on the open practice day at Encino. Not required for the beginner's class. I don't really think that is true. Although I think some of the training nights will dictate a need for a higher skill set. It is my understanding that you need to be a strong rider to attend the Tuesday night race practice, but I think the other training sessions are open to anyone. I have only done the Saturday Kierin training, and there is no qualification for riding that session. There were a couple people riding one day who had obviously never ridden on a track.
