Ok, it's about 2-1/2 weeks away. Who is in? We got wet last year and then weather changed for a great afternoon - we'll hope the good weather starts a little sooner this year. I think we'll be riding the big red Trek tandem, but Kim just got a new Madone so she may want to ride it.

Psimet. You may consider starting at the North end (Bryn Mawr). You can take Peterson to the lake, and parking should be less of an issue (read free). CBF does say you should start downtown, but last year we hopped on at the north end (it is close to our house). Nobody stopped us, and tons of other people did the same thing.

Who is in?
Not us. We did it last year and had great fun, but this year we will be in Green County, WI. Beer, cheese and sausage, in no particular order. Oh, and about 150 miles of riding to train for RAGBRAI.

I'm signed up with my youngest son for the ride. He's just gotten an summer internship at his college, so I don't think he'll be home to do it this year.:( I'll do the 30 miles; I believe my brother will still be joining me.

I raised 150$ for American Diabetes Association. Which also is a sponsor of the Bike the Drive event and does the ADA fund raising ride together with the BTD event. :D

Can you park at Foster Beach, or down toward Lawrence or Wilson?

I realized this post came off wrong so I feel like I should correct it. I am actually pretty excited to ride with the family. I really don't get much of an opportunity to do it and with my sone being 2 I am finding that I am actually trying to find more time to spend with him .

I am hoping the family has the fortitude to put on more than 15 though...:D. That would make for a killer day.

I am not sure if you can reach the parking lots on the lake side of LSD. It looked as if all exits south of Bryn Mawr were closed off by police and barriers, so you may or may not be able to get on to LSD there. Bryn Mawr was wide open though

If you cannot reach the parking lots at the lake, you may be better off parking west of Broadway. In the Lakewood/Balmora neighborhood. lIt is a short few blocks ride to the lake from there. At that time traffic should be light.

Duppie, can you park at say school parking lots, perhaps up at Senn High School (my ol' school!)?
Or are they fenced and locked off-hours these days? I always found parking in that Andersonville area to be really tight.

I've been looking forward to this, but I don't think we can do it. Parking only seems reasonable downtown because of the start. The site seems portrays a tightly controlled route with minimal access anywhere other than downtown. It says nothing about DOE registration, and seems not to permit it. When will the road course be closed? By noon we'll be led off of LSD onto the trail, so if you want a long ride of say 2 circuits its normal bike path riding. It's stll a great path (Michigan, Denver, and St. Louis have nothing to compare in my experience), but it will be MUP riding that isn't the best for a lengthy ride.

I guess the upshot of therant is, I can't do it this year.:( I missed the window, parking seems the worst, I need a hotel, it's not that great as a long ride, and I can ride the Lakefront anytime. Oh well!:(:(

Last year I drove up on the Stevenson (I-55), got off at [I think] MLK and made my way over to Michigan Avenue. Drove down Michigan Ave. until I go to an entrance for the underground garage at Grant Park. Pulled right in, got right to a spot, unloaded and suited up, rode out to the start. Parking couldn't have been easier. We were on the course about 6am, over and done before 9am. I beleive 9:30 is when they start moving people over to the path, and traffic is allowed back on at 10:30am. All that is on the site: www.bikethedrive.org

I'm thinking of riding my bike to downtown, riding the 30 miles on LSD and riding back home, making it almost a century with 90 miles of total riding.

It says nothing about DOE registration, and seems not to permit it.
Picked up from their website: "Day-of registration will be available for $50 if the event is not yet sold out. This fee doesn’t include a T-shirt." Note that in the last few years the event carried 17,000-19,000 people. It's considered sold out at 25,000 people.

When will the road course be closed? By noon we'll be led off of LSD onto the trail, so if you want a long ride of say 2 circuits its normal bike path riding.Again, taken from the website: "Lake Shore Drive will open to bicyclists at 5:30 a.m", "Around 9:45, volunteers will move bicyclists safely to the Lakefront Trail" .That gives you a good 4 hours to ride. At 15mph you can do the circuit twice in that time.

Not sure about Senn.
I guess that is a matter of opinion. Living there, i'd say don't expect any Wallyworld sized parking lots, but I always find plenty of parking on the side streets. (Clark can be a little crazy)

I'm flying out from LA for it--most of my big extended Irish/Greek family rides it every year and kept selling me on it, so I finally got it together to sign up and come out for it this year, and of course more than half of them--including my smack-talking Little-5-riding frat-boy* cousin, who I have an ongoing mission to destroy on the bike--flaked out on me.

Two things:

1. If I start the ride at 5 with just arm/legwarmers, am I going to freeze?

2. If you see an otherwise lovely brunette woman with a pretty smashed-up face/missing front teeth hanging out at the start/stop, give her a thumbs up or some sign of support. That's my mom--she was going to ride it this year, too, but on one of her first training rides, went over her handlebars and face-planted. She's not riding, of course, but still coming out to cheer us on, despite how self-conscious she feels about her face. I just want her to know that any cycling injury scars should be considered honorably won.

*With apologies** to the Little-5-riding frat-boys out there.

**Kind of.

I'm heading out on the SS I used last year... except this year I'll have it flipped to the free-wheel (I'm still deciding on whether to use 48/17 or 48/16). I'll be starting from the north, trying to do a full loop and then end up at the start/finish near the loop before the event closes down (so, about 37 miles?).

Current weather forecasts put 5am temps in the low 50's with cloudy skies continuing through the morning. I'll be in shorts and probably have a long sleeve jersey which I'll shed.

Last year (in the rain) I rode with Shorts, SS jersey + armwarmers and I was ok. Right off the start it was a little brisk, but once the body got warmed up it was fine.
