i posted this in commuting but it soon got lost, and i realized that it was better here in car free. this video is about my friend tim wright, a knifemaker living outside sedona, az. tim's never owned a car. (he makes some of the absolute best knifes in the world too.) there are times that he's hauling crates that weigh more than 100 pounds to fedex on his bike. he's got more integrity than anyone i know, not just because he doesn't drive, but that's certainly part of it. anyway, tell me what you think!

Great video! Thanks for posting it. At various points in my life I've wanted to make both bicycle frames and custom knives, so I suppose I can relate to this guy. :D

he's from an area called 'jack-ass flat', at least that's what he tells me. it's a really beautiful area though i wasn't impressed with the city of sedona at all when i visited him. he sometimes has students whom he teaches knife-making to, but they have to ride their bike to his shop. he's about 12 miles outside of sedona. tim's also a nationally ranked table-tennis player. really quite a guy.
here are a few pics that i found online of his knives. they're from a guy named joss delage. joss, hope you don't mind. these are his folders. he makes the entire knife, everything, including the tiny screws that hold it together and the little tool for taking them apart. notice the three pin pattern for the screws? he's now using a five pin pattern because it's more organic. took him a week to make the change, but it was the right thing to do...those little screws are like 1/8th inch long.really amazing. inside the little tool is a super tiny pump with oil in it to lubricate the hinge. he only makes a few a year. but he also makes kitchen knives and sheath knives. i carry one every day. it's to remind myself not to compromise my life away. he's just started making pedals for mountain bikes. if he sends some pics of those, i'll post them...

that is a great video. it is unfortunate that common sense like his is so few and far between.

Cool video, seems like a nice guy. Sedona is a fairly nice place, especially if you enter it from the north on the 89 from Flagstaff. I think I am going to bike that this summer.
Too bad he is only affecting a few students with biking; think if someone like Intel, Google, Deloitte, etc pushed biking onto their employees.

What is this a pissing contest of who uses less oil? Its like "keeping up with the Jones" but for oil conservation instead of status symbols. Look, I think its great when ANYONE takes a step in the right direction, which bicycle commuting is. Even if you drive a Hummer but decide to start riding your bike just one day a week to work instead of driving, thats a good thing. I will not pass judgment like that on other people. Everyone quit your *****ing and try to use these forums to inspire each other, as well as others, to do more to help the problem.
This video reminds me a lot of Critical Mass. Who owns the roads and what are they supposed to be used for? Google it if you dont know about Critical Mass in SF.

Tim's got it going on! That's WALKING THE WALK, not just talking the talk. (Or is it, in this case, 'riding the ride...? Lame, I know....)
This is even more of a statement than the guy in Denver who, on his way home from discharge from the Navy, won a buttload of money in LV, and instead of buying a sweet ride, opened a bike shop. Hasn't driven since 1992, and doesn't even have a license anymore. Can't remember this guy's name, though, it's been so long since I read the story.
Tim doesn't even promote the main message of how he lives -- he just lives his life, on his terms.
(My take, anyway, on his main message is this: the success of a life lived with passion and purpose is not measured by the bank account, or by the things you own {which, in turn, own YOU}. He who dies with the most toys does not win, but dies empty. Fulfillment is the currency of a life lived well.)

The knife-maker is a bit of a crank, but a very inspiring crank. I admire him tremendously, and the fact that he avails himself of the services of UPS changes nothing in my eyes.
