Can anyone explain to me how Shimano setups are ranked. I'm shopping for a hybrid (long story here), and am trying to compare models and see what I'm really paying for and what's best for me. -- Thanks

(1) Dura Ace, (best) (2) Ultegra, (Better) (3) 105, (Better than good) (4) Sora, and (5) Tiagra, and whatever is out there.

I may have the Sora And Tiagra in reverse order, I can't remember.

Yup, Tiagra is better than Sora.

Thanks guys, what about when comparing them to Shimano's mountain bike components. Are trere any baseline equivilants? I keep seeing some (700c) hybrids with mountain bike comps and others with road bike ones.

The shimano website lists all of the lines for both mtb and road.
You can see how a line stacks up in each category.
Click on either mtb or road on the left.

I can give you the first three from best down: XTR, XT, and LX

Here's the link to the Shimano website. On the left side you'll see MTB, Road, & Comfort. If you click on each of these links you'll see a listing of components from best to not.

From top level to bottom level:

Road: Dura Ace, Ultegra, 105, Tiagra, Sora, and a flat bar set that kind of fits between 105 and Tiagra. There is a 600 lever/brake set that's for smaller hands that is an Ulterage level set

MTB: XTR, XT, LX, Deore, Acera, Alvino, Tourney, then some unamed groups.
