greetings -
i'm currently reduced to riding an old schwinn road bike, with 27" rims, currently with 27x1 1/4 tires -- does anyone know of a "fatter" tire i could put on these rims, as i expect to sometimes ride on desert gravel roads this winter?

re:sheldon, the reason i'm riding the schwinn, is 1 1/2 years ago i sent the nos stronglight crank arm for my '73 Atala to sheldon to be tapped for pedal threads -- he "lost" it, refuses to replace it, or pay me its worth -- so please don't suggest that i contact harris cyclery for the 27" tube

thanks, bob

Nashbar had a few 1 3/8" tires. That's as big as 27" tires get.

BTW, there are replacement arms for Stronglight cranks available. Have you considered buying one?

I'm running a pair of 27x1 3/8 Kenda tires on my old Schwinn (which I'm not reduced to - I love the thing!). They're slightly knobby, and can often be found for $12-$15 a pair on Ebay (search for "kenda touring" or "kenda cyclocross")

thanks for the info -- i will look for these tires(i just bought some kenda tires -- for my travel trailer!) -- and i didn't mean to demean the schwinn -- i love it

i know that i can buy the stronglight crankarm, though this is the left one, and usually i see them, in sets, for quite a bit -- this was a new old stock left crank, had never even been threaded, and i was fortunate to find it to replace the old crankarm, which was stripped -- i've looked for the past year for a replacement, no luck, unless i buy a complete set, more $ than this retired man can afford, particularly when i feel i'm owed one by sheldon -- its the principle of the thing
