Hey all!
I'm looking at getting an older mountain bike for commuting. I ultimately will run slicks on it because I just won't do much trail riding, but I've found in my older age (42 lol!) that I like the "feel" of the mountain bike frame, versus my old road racer style.
Anyhow, here is a description of the bike that I'm looking at:

custom built rocky mountain blizzard frame.. (older frame circa late 90's) medium size
leader lawill3 front shocks! mavic gold rims. lx xt deraillers.raceface crank.. put wayyyyy more than 300 into it in the last few years im moving and i cant take it with me..
$250 firm

The guy will trade me the bike for my old guitar amp, which isn't worth much to me anymore.

It looks decent enough. I can't afford to go new on the bike. Even the low-end junk stuff at the LBS starts at over $400! I'm not sure about the funky front fork. Is there any that I should be weary of or that's easy to check when I go to look at this?

Thanks!
Aldo

Photos would help determine model year and condition. It seems like a good deal if you can trade straight up. The Control Tech built Lawill fork is a freak of nature and should probably be swapped out with a rigid fork for commuting.

Here's a linkie: http://stcatharines.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-sports-bikes-custom-built-rocky-mountain-NEW-PRICE-W0QQAdIdZ50198736

I hope no other local jumps in before I get there! :-o

I'm definitely with Ebay'g that funky fork and going rigid. That would suit my purpose better.

Thats a nice vintage bike.. more like mid '90's than late.

It's got a really bizarre mix of parts, but it seems to be in good shape. The addition of a rigid fork, front V-brakes and some slick tires would turn it into a great commuter.

Thanks for the good words!
The guy is sort of giving me the slip right now so I'm not sure if he's a crackhead, changed his mind or his computer doesn't work! lol
I will post back once I get a chance to see it in person and take a spin.

I'd change to V-brakes, but try the fork. It looks money is a Battlestar Galactica kinda way.

hahaha ... Well, the cheapest thing to do is just RIDE it as is. I would likely switch the knobbies to slicks first and then see how it is.

I'd keep the fork. Nearly period correct and mad style points.

Yeah. I'd keep the fork too.
