My son is 13 and really wants one of the Tony Hawk BMX bikes (http://huckjambikes.com). Before I purchase I wanted to get some feedback from people. Has anyone bought one? I can't see them being bad quality if it has the Tony Hawk name on it.

You're falling into a serious trap. The Tony Hawk bikes are utterly terrible. Buy anything but that.

AGREED!

Yeah, I wouldn't get one. Look at some of the cheaper completes on Dan's (http://www.danscomp.com) Comp.

By and large they are no different than any other department store bike. And in the BMX world (Bike world in general), department store bikes are looked upon rather poorly.
If you are going to judge a bike based merely on who's name is on it, at least start by looking for the name of someone who actualy RIDES a bike. For example: Dave Mirra (MirraCo) or Matt Hoffman (Hoffman Bikes). You won't find these at Wal-Mart though.

What is your budget?

bmx... get a GHP awesome bike

Only for racing.

Thank you for the advice wds178. I think that is why he likes it for the Tony Hawk name. He likes the Tokyo bike(http://www.huckjambikes.com/ss/products.php?item=8529-50)...one of the signature series bikes that I guess are only available online. Since He is not fond of the "Walmart" bikes that is prob another reason he likes them. I didnt want to spend over $400 and since this is only $299 it works.

ChristAir

Did you check out danscomp.com?

minichamp31

If that bike is $299, get a DK Sixpack for like $10 more. It's a much better bike.

Street rider

word. go dk. or eastern if hes just gonna cruise around on it.

We did check out danscomp...he doesnt like any of their bikes. I think the Tony Hawk name and the fact that his friends have one is attracting him to the Tony Hawk bikes. It seems like all of the kids his age have a Tony Hawk bike...seems to be the latest "trend".

Check this one out too: http://www.danscomp.com/101061.php?cat=BIKES (DK Cleveland) it's the one I am probably going to buy in a couple days. Full chromoly frame, 3 piece crank, 48H chrome rear wheel with 14mm rear cassette, 2 pegs, gyro. Not sure what height your kid is, but he would likely be growing quickly at that age anyway, so the 20.5 in top tube will either be fine or fit great quickly. The bike is priced well too and fits your budget. I've heard complaints about the tires found on the 2007 model (this is the 2008) but I don't know if they are the same tires, either way just replace them when they are worn out.

What do some of you guys think of that bike, good choice?

minichamp31

It's a pretty good bike. Go for it. Not the Tony Hawk's though.

Cool, I am going for it as soon as my tax stimulus is clear to use. I'd never buy a Tony Hawk bike, lol.. that would be like a Mirra pro skateboard deck.. :D

Thank you for all of your help. Unfortunately it did not have any impact on what my son wanted. Since the bike is for him I did get what he wanted. Again I appreciate all your advice and I will let you know what happens with his Tony Hawk bike.

minichamp31

Oh geez. I just wish good luck.

You guys need to remember that he is 13. With a 400 budget, yes there are much better bikes. He is bound to change his mind a year or two down the road anyway. Maybe then he could get a better bike.

Any updates on this bike?
