Mountain Biking - Crank Bros Acid Pedals?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Anyone here familiar with the Crank Bros Acid pedals?
I'm looking to put a platform pedal that is Crank Bros compatible on my Big Dummy. The Big Dummy is more of a city bike for me which means I may use street shoes or wear my cycling shoes. I may even ride to work in my work clothes on this a la Copenhagen Chic.
I want to hear personal experience with these pedals. Is the platform pedal workable or is it just a poor approximation of a platform?

The Mallet is more of what you are looking for. These look like the mountain version of the Quattro, which has a platform that is useless without the cleats to lock into them.
I use Quattros on my roadie, and candies on both of my pigs and you can't use them effectively without the proper shoes/cleats. Go with the Malletts.

I second the choice of the Mallet Pedals. I have them and I think they are great.

Did you only use them with cleats or did you ever use them with regular shoes? How were they with regular shoes?
Gastro - I know you had a pair of Mallets, other than the slop that develops with Crank Bros cleats, how did you find them as platform pedals?

One of the reasons I got them is so that I can hop on the bike with regular shoes an go for a quick ride. If I am doing something longer I wear cleats. I have fairly big feet (13 1/2) and even tho I wear stiff riding shoes, I like the extra support the Mallet pedals give.

Mallets don't give you extra support when clipped in....
@Santiago. Mallets suck if you're looking for something that grips your shoes very well. If you're just looking for something to use as dual purpose pedals, then they're great. From personal experience.

Best barefoot clipless pedal evar.
They were okay in the dry I suppose, but they sucked in the wet. pretty easy on the shins when slipped, I guess. The newer ones are different I think.
Anyway, DX clipless score significantly higher in their factor of flipflop grippiness (as well as all other measures of pedal performance, IMO).
I've still got those Mallets around somewhere if you want to try them.

I think the new Mallets have pins instead of plates.

This what you referring to?

Hmmm, the new Mallets do have pins. If I remember correctly the old ones just had an aluminum strip on the front and back edges. Maybe the Mallets would be an option. Gastro, you have the old style, right?

Oh, and I was referring to the PD-M647 DX earlier.

Ah, thanks. Reading comprehension > me.
I have 3 pairs of Crank Bros so I want to avoid swapping cleats.

Hey, you can have my Mallets for cheap if you want. I don't use them anymore. They have some paint rubbed off, but they work great and have all of the original packaging and items sans cleats. PM if interested.

You have the pin models?

You have the pin models?
I don't know. That information is classified but can be obtained via $100.
No.
I can just let you have them for $20+shipping and handling. If you run skate-style SPD shoes the new model will grip better, but if you use XC shoes I don't think it'll matter. I just need to free up a little space on my shelf since I'm getting new pedals for my road bike....

Thanks, but I'll pass. I have an inside line on Gastro's, which are similar to yours. I think all I have to do is show up to Pisgah and they're mine. I'll have to dig up the thread where he wrote that, but I seem to remember that.

That's cool, I know Gastro is closer, et cetera. I just want to unload this stuff. ;)
Anyhow....
EDIT- Is he giving them to you for free? Why don't I get free stuff?

Not quite free. I helped with his build spreadsheet and it will cost me a plane ticket to get to Pisgah.

Just stuck out in my head...I like the Dummy. I'd like to build one as a "kid hauler". LOL

I did build a kid hauler. I got a cushion for the snap deck, a stoker bar and foot rests so my daughters are comfortable and safe.

That's awesome! Ed's tribe would love that!
I've ridden around town on the Acids w/o clips and they work pretty well. Not that useful when you're in the mountains but pretty good for riding around town, unless you want to jump off stairs, etc. Probably not as good as the Mallets, but they are lighter and less bulky.
Ive ridden around town on PD-M545 in dress shoes, and sneakers, and thought they were far better than i was expecting, i loved my shimano clipless.

I have a newb question about pedals. I just got this bike: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/fantom29pro_08.htm
I was interested in a dual-purpose pedal as well and was considering the acid and mallet. I'll be using the bike mainly for short commute to work but also on the mountain right outside my door.
Here are my newb questions:
-Do cleats come with pedals? I ask as the ones I look at online usually say "replacement cleats" which makes me wonder if they come with them when you buy initially.
-How do you tell if the shoes you're looking at are compatible with the crank bros cleat system? I was looking at walkable mtb shoes, such as these:
http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?sku=13874
Thanks for your input!

Pedals usually come with cleats. They do wear out which is why replacement cleats are available.
Crank Bros require shoes that are SPD compatible. Just look for "SPD" compatible shoes and you'll be fine.
