I am 36, have not really ridin a bike regularly since I started driving.
I'm 6 feet and about 237 pounds, looking for a mostly road, but light trail friendly bike.
I visited my local bike shop and they recommended eother a trek 7x00 or Specialized crosstrail.
Since my budget is $400 - $500, I looked at the Trek 700 and rode it around a bit, not a bad bike but the steering seemed squirrelly or loose. I didn't like the cushy seat either. Also the shifting was not too precise, I like the trigger shifter better, so the 7300 with a different seat would be better.
So I tried the Specialized crosstrail, I liked this much better, but it, naturaly, is $500. The ride was better, the tires were smooth on top with the knobbies on the side. Much better shifting.
SO I am inclined to get the Specialized crosstrail.
BUT!
I am looking all over the web and cannot find this bike. The shop tells me it is just a crosstrail, not the crosstrail sport, pro, or ltd. I can't even find just a plain Crosstrail anywhere.
Is this a real bike? Or a sneaky dealer?

I wonder if it's a 2007 model, companies sometimes change model names slightly between model years. Also, if your not in the US, sometimes the same model in a different country goes by a slightly different name.

I'll go back and ride the Specialized again, also noting the model and serial number if possible.
However if anyone else has suggestions for a 6' 240# guy who can ride 4-6 hours per week during the summer, mostly road, please chime in. I need a bike that can move, I don't want a beast or total mountain bike.
But something that can handle light trails as well as smooth pavement.
My goal is to get to 215# by October.

Personally, I would start watching Craigs List, and pick up a mountain bike. You can put more road oriented tires on it and you will be good to go.
I picked up a Trek 950 off Craigs List for $80, put $20 into Trekking handlebars and $30 in slick tires. I would not consider this an unusual or great deal, more like a good/decent deal, one that appears on C/L all the time. I personally would not spend $500 on my first bike. You could well go through a few bikes as you discover/determine what works best for you. And once you start riding more, you could find that the type of riding could be much different than you expect (either much more pavement oriented, or much less). Thats one advantage of the rigid mountain bikes, they are pretty good on or off road, just by changing the type of tires. Another advantage of starting with a used (and lower cost of course) bike is that you can sell it without eating a lot of depreciation. I would hate to spend my entire bicycle budget on one bike, discover I picked the wrong one, and then have to eat about half the cost flipping it.
I would not pick a bike solely on the type of tires on it. Tires can be changed out pretty reasonably. As for your mystery model, maybe its a Specialized Crossroads. That is their hybrid model.

OK, I went back to the LBS.
Apparently this is just a Specialized Crosstrail. It is basicly a silver version of the sport model with 24 speeds rather than 27. The cranks are different and really that's it. So the price tag is $100 less, $499 instead of $599.
Nice bike, if I can't find anything that I like better within the next couple of weeks, this is probably the bike I am going to get.
I'm still looking though.

Hi, go check out Specialized bikes website, there is an archive there, i think the bike your speaking of is 2007 model.....they do have a Crosstrail Model bike thats all silver..... 2007 model www.specialized.com
