I have a miyata touring bike which I am trying to convert into a SS/fixed gear. I measured the dropout and it says 5.5 inches which is 140MM! I don't know if I measured it correctly or what but is it possible to use a 135mm hub and bolt it on? would the stress ruin the frame? I read somewhere that quick release axles are larger than they are supposed to be...someone with knowledge fill me in?

Running a 135mm hub would be completely fine. However, 135mm SS hubs usually have a wider chainline than regular track hubs, so you'll need to compensate with a longer BB spindle.
A better and totally safe solution (assuming the frame is steel) would be to cold-set the frame to 120 or 130.
