Mountain Biking - Free bikes rock!?

Okay, so I got a free bike today but I dunno what the heck to do widdit...it fits me though:
It's O'skool Schwinn "Super Le Tour 12.2"
I was thinking about taking it out to the trails and bashing the livin' piss out of it, but maybe I'll just throw a flat bar on it for a quick ride to work....hmmm...singlespeed?

By the way...the autofocus on my point'n'shoot just bit the dust, so...put on your beer goggles!

Crap...just googled it.

I guess it's from the mid-1970's and it was a dadgum good bike back then. It's got a lugged steel frame. It's all orig. and in good riding condition except for the freakin' post that seems to be jammed in like a square peg in a round hole or whatever.


Maybe it's worth something as a collector. No singlespeeding it. CRAP!! (Beating donkey nutz:deadhorse:)

put some more comfortable bars on (or at least some modern bar tape), leave it geared, add some fenders and you have yourself a sweet commuter. Or make it a single/fixed, add fenders/bars, and you have a sweet commuter. Either way, turn it into some kind of commuter.

Single speed! As a single speed that will be light, fast and so much damn fun. Do it!

While it's pretty beat up, you might get $200 for it if you clean it up nicely. It was a rather nice bike in it's day. Just so you know.

I'm not too into selling it, I don't think. I LOVE free bikes...even if they aren't trail worthy. If it were a total waste, I'd take it to the local sk8pRk and pay some "rubber people" to jump around while I video taped, haha. JK.

I like to respect a bike/manufacturer that produced a decent bike in its day. Too bad Schwinn sold out to the big BullsEye, eh? I loved the Homegrown hardtails.

I don't have the heart to sell it, now that I've read a bit about it. (bidding starts at $500)

Why not clean it up/tune it up and ride it as a road bike/commuter?

I say, clean it up, and ride it as a commuter.

I'm in the clean it and ride it around the hood crowd myself. It'd be perfect for that, if it fits.

Clean, re-cable, tune, maybe replace some worn stuff (bar tape, tires, brake pads all if necesary). Put some old school pedals on there and rock it retro style around the 'hood. :) Grow out the 70's mustache, long hair, get some vintage cycling clothes, one of them little bicycle caps. Did cyclists back then wear wide collar shirts and bell bottom biking shorts?

I don't think it needs much to be useable. I need to change the tubes b/c it's got 20lbs of slime in them.

Those are nice riding bikes. It would have 27 inch tires and if you go to Nashbar they have Panaracer Pasela TG tires, in 27 1 1/4 on sale for $9.75. That is really cheap for a great riding puncture resistance tire that would have that bike well on it way to being a super commuter.

I've been looking for a bike just like that. It's a _really_ nice bike to ride. Sure, it's heavy compared to something modern, but it'll ride like a limo. It's way too big for me, or I'd be PM'ing you about buying it. I'd say it's from about 1982.

If you want to learn about bike mechanics, that's the perfect way to start. Take it apart and write in a notebook what went where. Clean everything up. Put new lines, tires, and a chain on it. You'll have a sweet old bike.

Don't do the fixie thing to that one. It's too nice. If you want to go single speed, get a Varsity or some other Schwinn that's not as valuable.
