Folding Bikes - Dahon hammerhead 8.0 is out!

Hi,

Dahon hammerhead 8.0 is now being sold in south Korea.
It is reasonably cheap, has breakaway frame that fits in a bag nicely, and seriously light.
One downside is the lack of any front suspension (no pantour hubs, no kinetix fork) but actually some people prefer that. (Lighter, no power absorbed in suspension etc.)

Frame breaks in two and can be packed into a trunk for air travel.

Impressive stock weight 8.410kg (L size, with some tags, w/o pedals)
And the bike is reasonably priced as well. (around $1300 in south korea)
With some slight tuneup you can easily build a 7.xkg breakaway bike for touring, which is very hard to achieve with other frames (One of my mates own 7.6kg Pocket Rocket Pro with sram RED components, but he has spent $$$$$ on it)

Are you located in South Korea? Im planning to do a tour there next year. I have been thinking of getting a Smoothhound in korea and use it for the tour (aka more excuses to buy another bike!). But not sure about those handlebars. Your mates hammerhead look nice with the drops, but the rims wouldnt suit touring. Do you know if either the smoothhound or the hammerhead has front and rear rack mounts?

Do you know of any good bike shops in korea with folding bikes?

Very nice. I really like the breakaway feature. Differentiates the bike from a regular road bike.

Well, if it's nicer, lighter, better than the 7.0, & will go into a suitcase, then put me down for #2 ;-)

Maybe Thor can get a good deal for the UK folk? He seems a decent chap - maybe one of us could volunteer to go over to the US to collect them? ;-)

To me the suspension front fork is the usp on the Hammerhead, so it's a shame it doesn't come with the Breakaway frame.

Agreed - gimme the suspension on the 7.0 over the breakway on the 8.0 If I want breakaway I will buy a moulton. Unless of course, the 8.0 is much much much much cheaper than a moulton (hint, Mr Hon).

AND a Hammerhead 7.0 as well (and a second MUSL!)...

I don't know really - I just WANT the separable frame so I can put it in a suitcase and take it away with me (although I could just take the MU...)

It looks so cool that I rode past some kids in the street yesterday and one of the guys went "Now that is one sexy bike"...

Maybe I should get the Smoothound instead - Datako, I presume you could just take the fork off your old Hammerhead and stick it on? I wonder if A frames would do you a special?!

Frame geometry would change if you added a suspension fork as it's higher to fit in all the cantelever gubbins.

First thing I looked at:)

The new model has a longer headtube so it's not possible without surgery.

I must admit to briefly contemplating buying one and taking it to a frame maker to get the necessary mods, but then I added an EBB, disk mounts, and other such luxuries to my wishlist, and before I woke up I realised that a custom frame would be better. Still thinking about that :thumb:

Assuming the new model is the same in sizing as mine
1. Anything by MKS, but decent flat pedals are available from most dealers from £15 up
2. Plenty room. Usually a fiddly job unless the mudguards are designed specifically for that model. Plenty 20" mudguards out there.
3. Seatpost on mine is 27.2mm diameter which is a common bike size, so you can get one from most dealers. I recommend instead looking at the later model SDG I-beam saddles - they are quite comfortable.

1. I'd stick with the MKS EZY pedals - as far as I'm concerned they're as good as anything.
2. Apparently the 20" Dahon Mudguards will fit, but I have yet to try this
3. Yep - I'm not sure if the 2008 comes with the Kore or the SDG I-Beam post, but you can get the Kore one, chuck a converter on top and use it for a railed seat. Works fine. As Datako says though - standard ish size seat post - I'd get a thudbuster maybe... (still toying with it).

For Raxel - do you know if the frame (frame only) of the Smooth Hound weighs much more than the Hammerhead?

Tom keep us in the loop on your US buying. I started a thread on this in a general sense a while back - bought a DT mini, great bike, but with a flaw. Minorish, but affects resale value. If I was in the US I would have shipped it back for a swap, but not worthwhile from the UK - moral - see before you buy in the US or be prepared to take a risk, or buy from a reputable dealer online. Thor who posts here seems to be one of those. I have an HH7 btw, it is so cool, discount purchase from Winstanley bikes.

cheers all for the helpful advice - fitted some mks pedals yesterday (I too have a winstanley HH7) much improved but too slippy with office shoes on - will find a cunning compromise eventually

Will be in New York and in SF in a couple of weeks - any ideas if there are any bike shops there who would have a SH in stock - or a HH8 ?

No 2008 Smooth Hounds in USA.
