Foo - Long Haired Kitty Cats

I've got this fuzzball whose hair is probably 3-1/2 inches long - the tail is an absolute spectacular PLUME!

However, he can only do so much and I brush him every day, no problem. But he/we live in a semi-dirty house (well not my room anyway) and my big guy loves to PLOP over whenever I come into a room - say like the kitchen - home to 3 semi-to unclean litter boxes and about a quart of kitty litter distributed on the floor (5 cats in the house). So he plops over into the dirt all the time and he does groom, but his fur is so long and thick - he can't make it through it ...

Anyone take their cat in for grooming? Or am I just one of those Cat Nuts .... :D

You should be able to find a pet groomer who can do that. No sedating, it's over quickly. They are simply buzzed with an electric razor.

Unless you know what you're doing, I would leave it to a professional, by the way. Cats have delicate skin which gets even more delicate as they get older.

+1 On the pet groomer. Your kitty will love you for it. Well....not at first, but after a couple days the cat will stop being pissed off at you and be thankful that it can actually clean itself!

We have two long haired cats.

Ivan is a Maine Coon type cat, brown tabby, and he is rather large (20lbs) and in need of a workout on a kitty trainer. He has a hard time cleaning himself all over. He does love to be combed, fortunately. He has some dandruff and sometimes gets knots in his fur that we need to trim out. Sometimes I think I should try to give him a bath. Someday...

Katya is a little grey kitty. She's a long hair, but is very fastidious and her hair is always perfect.

I have a long haired Calico named Jade (green green eyes). Although she is two years old, I'm waiting on her to grow enough so I can make a pair of cuddly slippers. And perhaps some mittens too.

I'm not sure what did it, but something did.

I ended up chasing my big boy around the house and finally capturing him so I could do a TRIM on that back end. Evidently he had a problem with the piece of fish my roommate so nicely gave the kitties yesterday. Yuckers. My cat is big, and is so traumatized from being a rescue kitty - he reacts so badly when there's a loud noise, etc - and OMG - have ME scoop him up and point him toward the ceiling and lift the tail out to a good 90 degree angle and start snipping? Poor guy, I traumatized him :D

When I move from here, it's dirty here, I will get him groomed ---- and boy --- I will definitely tell the groomer my kitty's issues...

Groomers are pretty good with that stuff. They are used to having animals come in who are frightened, which is why they work pretty fast.

A summer clip on a cat probably takes all of ten minutes, maybe less.

We have our cat shaved once a month by a groomer. It costs $29. It is worth every penny.

Just make it an outdoor cat.

I need to take my kitty in for a 'lion cut' soon. Did it last summer, what a relief! She's a skittish thing, unlike our other cat. I will post a pic after the deed! :D

I go between Science Diet, Iams or right now Good Life Recipe - try to go for the more natural, less preservative food stuffs. I mean I have that up in my room - they really like stuff I have now. Oh and I always get the food geared toward hairballs. Now downstairs - my roommates buy the 50 lb of Kit-n-Kaboodle from a warehouse club. Ahhh, so my guy gets the good stuff upstairs anyways :D

Is there a natural pet store in your area? They often have supplements for long-haired cats that result in less shedding.

He's not really that bad shedding wise actually (hehe, have one of the little female kitties on my shoulder now - she's a doll) - he loves being brushed and basically flops over with a thump when I brings out his pink brush --- and my daily brushes - even in winter usually yield a a small mat the size of the hair brush and not thick at all. In fact I just looked at him. He's a big boy - and has taken to sleeping in the sink of a new bathroom going in or .... hehe ... I sooo have to get a picture of this ... in this basket sitting there. Now the basket maybe 8X10 inches and perhaps 8 inches high --- and my cat stuffs himself in there and fills up the basket. hehe Do NOT know how the hell he gets himself in there!

My friend gives her cat the lion cut. Poppy loves it, if she's not shaved, she sulks. Right after getting shaved she runs around cuddling with people and purring. Its like having two different cats. This season she got a mohawk at my request. They kept the fur running down her spine so she looks metal!! Next time she's getting lightning bolts.

Yeah, I know. I just live here, live in my room - and really don't do much in the way of cooking here - have my own utensils and microwave in my room. :)

I'm staying at my mothers for a few days and naturally the second I place clean sheets on the sofa he sets up shop.

hehe looks kinda like my guy - 'cept my guy has a "ruff" around his neck - he looks like a lion - and his tail - especially when brushed out is like 5" across.

He really likes being brushed out - which is funny cause he's not a real hands on cat - but he also likes being "scratched" - rolls over on his back and his big fuzzy belly is exposed and he loves it when you kinda treat him like you're kneading bread - and most definitely - ruffle him up and blast the fur in the wrong way - he loves it. Now pick him up - and he stops purring and stiffens right up, but not as bad as before - I've been handling him a lot and he is better. Vet time - he is a scared cat - but handles it. As a rescue kitty - he was taken in and live a few weeks in the house with the rest of the litter - but someone consistently did bad things (not use litter box) and it was determined it was one of two kitties - so my roomies, frustrated, kicked out the two likely suspects - my guy and another.

No sign of them for three weeks and one day my roommate opened up the side door and my guy ran in and stayed - right around the time I moved in. To pick up this kitten (no sign of long hair at that time except for this long hair sticking out of his ears) - was like picking up a stick - he stiffened right out, eyes bulging - even his legs were stuck in one position. Obviously he was traumatized out there. I immediately adopted the poor guy - and waited a few weeks and had him neutered and given full shots as well as tested for leukemia. And then he blossomed out to this HUGE cat!! -- who is now resting on my window ledge staring out at the street.

I'm glad I have him - beautiful cat who deserves a 2nd chance in life.

And I have a dark blue bedspread and a dark blue rug on the floor - he's actually not too bad on shedding - course I brush him every day - and my bedspread is virtually hair free (I've also taken to brushing out the two other year old "kittens" who are short hairs - with a brush that reminds me of a brush you shine shoes with - but their hair shines, is softer - and does not shed as much. Now the other two older cats I do not like - no one brushes them out and I'm thinking that's more of the hair I see around the house.

If I had my cat shaved like that he'd disappear and live in the couch - where we found him last week when the city came around and buzz sawed down a tree in front of the neighbor's house. He would not be the same cat. Plus he loves his big plume of a tail. I wake up at night sometimes and see a movement on the floor and look over my bed and see this plume of a tail - standing straight up - with a question mark hook at the end romping across the carpet to go jump to the window sill.

However, I think a nice deep clean would be nice when I leave here - but that's best left to the experts - I think I'd be a bloody mess if I attempted it. He's a big boy.

hehe - he likes the curser. And then he gets bored and PLOPS down - half on my lap - and upper half on the keyboard and ... WHOA - what did you just lay on??!!!! as my computer starts churning ....

OK, it's suddenly DUMP THE KITTY TIME and shut down whatever he turned on. He turns, gives me a dirty look, licks down that ruffled place I must have messed up as I did the Kitty Toss ---- toss up the plume tail and stalk out. Hmmmmph!

No, not Photoshopped. Cats actually have small bodies, and long haired cats can really fool you into thinking that there's a huge cat under all that fur.

Tude, groomers don't normally cut the fur on the tail, so IT Kitty would not be plumeless.

hehe, yeah, but it's the rest of the body that would most likely freak him out. Dunno - will see. So far house hunting is frustrating and because I'm still partners with Mom and have gotten frustrated early on with the process (as I knew I would) since my brothers can some how spot a bad roof 2 miles off - I refuse to look at a house until they've seen it as I had too many houses I looked at - several times each - only to have my most excellent brothers come in and dis them off. Not wasting my time. Thinking of just letting Mom set up and I shed off. So whenever that happens I think I'll have the big guy groomed - but basically washed and combed out. He has no knots or anything due to my grooming him.

They get used to it very quickly, and actually enjoy the relief from the heat in the summer.

He might surprise you!
