I went to my LBS to see what bikes they had in stock and am wondering if the Trek 4300 is worth the extra cost over the 3700 *they don't have any 3900's in stock*. I've never owned a suspension bike and don't know if one is that much better than the other. I test rode the 820 and 3700, it wasn't a perfect comparison as the 3700 was a slightly small 18" instead of 19.5" on the 820.

I decided against the 820 as the aluminum frame is probably worth the $40 extra, though I'm just having a hard time deciding if the 4300's $90 is worth it over the 3700's price.

Yes, the parts on it alone will more than make up for it.

Well worth it.

Alright, I'll have to go back and make sure they actually have a 19.5" in a 4300. Don't want to have them special order one as then it would cost an extra $50 give or take.

Wow, the store doesn't have the right inventory so they charge you for the pleasure of waiting around for them to "special order"? If they don't have the 4300 you want in stock (including color) I'd find another store to buy from.

Of course if the floor model is discounted because it's a previous model year holdover then I take it back...

Well I called them and they have the 4300 in a 19.5" but it has to be put together before I can ride it. As for a different store, the next closest dealer is in Utah. I'd probably pay $50 minimum in gas just to go there and get back.

Just wait for it. It'll be worth it.

It only takes 20 minutes. It is actually assembled in a box. Just throw the stem/bars, front wheel, pedals, RD on it, adjust the cables...and you're set to roll.

They prob. just have a lotta crap in line.

yes the 4300.
it has disk brake mounts and is a generally better bike

True that it's for the most part put together, but they seemed to be fairly busy so I thought it fine for them to take a day or two to put it together. I'll be heading over there either Monday or Tuesday to see about riding and probably buying a bike. Not sure which color they have or if they have both, though I guess if they only have the one it doesn't make a big difference as the important thing is the quality.

This shop sounds like a bit of a joke.

But despite the ridiculas extra charge...i would still recommend getting it. The 4300 is an excellent and quality built bike.

Yup i love my 4300, put on some semi slicks, and it makes a very light and competent pavement bike.

With the 4300 you get alum bars and stem, 3700 has steel, better fork (not much, but a little) and a slightly better alum frame. It has disc mounts, but if you really want disc brakes I would get a bike that already has them. Would be cheaper in the long run. I think the 3700 has dick mounts too now that I think of it. The 4300 also comes with better wheels and tires, hubs are the same. The 4300 also has a removable/replaceable rear der hanger if I remember

hmm i see this thread is old now, but i also looked at a Trek 4300 yesterday. i really like it. it is really crappy out here so i couldn't test ride it, but based on what you guys are saying about it, i think i will grab it. i really dig the matt orange color to.

^^ yeah, but post is still relevant for others interested in this bike. Most LBS still have '08s on the floor
