Commuting - email I sent out to everyone at my school re: bike to work week

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Tell me what you think...

As you may/may not know this week May 12-16 is "Bike to Work Week" and May 16th is "Bike to Work Day". I would like to encourage and challenge you to consider riding your bike to Parker at least 1 day this week. At Parker and in Chiropractic we represent a wellness oriented lifestyle and bicycling to work/school is a great way to incorporate health/wellness into your life. I especially challenge the leaders in the faculty to set an example not only to the students, but to your patients as well. The benefits of commuting to school/work via bicycle:

Improved Cardiovascular function
Increased Lung Capacity
Increased Metabolism during and after riding
Increased Mental function
Weight Loss
Savings in gas and vehicle operating costs
Decreased Pollution
Prevent disease
Some common objections or excuses to not bike to school/work and solutions:

Dirty/Sweaty/Offensive clothes and hygiene: Carry a change of clothes with you and shower at the SPA
How long would it take: A 7 mile bike ride with stoplights depending on your physical condition should take only about 30 minutes. Compared to driving this would only add about 10-15 minutes onto your commute time/waking up earlier. What better way to add work out time into your already busy day? Instead of sitting on your butt in your car, spend it getting some valuable exercise.
I live too far away: You can ride your car/train/bus to a point and switch to the bikes. People routinely have 20-40 mile commutes where they may ride a few miles to the nearest rail/bus stop/park and ride and then complete the commute by riding a few more miles to their destination. You could also use a bike rack, drive your car to a safe parking location within a reasonable distance and then ride your bike the rest of the way.
Too hot/cold/weather etc: In the summer, you will sweat, but you can shower when you get here, in the winter you can dress in layers and stay very comfortable. You decide how hardcore you want to be with incliment weather (rain, snow etc) but people bike year round in places like Minnesota all the time.
Dallas Traffic is unsafe: You can find side streets in residential neighborhoods most times that parrallel major ateries that have less traffic.
I dont own a bike/bikes are too expensive: Figure out how much money you spend in gas per week and divide that by how much a bike would cost. That is how long it would take for your investment to pay for itself and begin returning to you.
I rely too much on my car, I am lazy and I would rather complain about gas prices than do anything about it: Congratulations.
I look forward to seeing you on the road. The more people rely less on their vehicles and more on their own power, the safer the roads will be and the impact we can make on society in general.

I'd argue that there's no reason you should get sweaty if you don't want to. If you feel you're going to get sweaty, slow down.

When it is 100* with 50% humidity, you sweat just walking outside...

I would disagree! Unfortunatley, I am one of those individuals that will sweat at a normal walking pace when the temps are in the 80s. I don't have time to slow down that much and make a 25 mile one way commute! That, however is a minor inconvenience. That is why we have showers.

Yup, I have never been able to cycle without sweating. I've tried slowing down and even wearing so little clothing that I'm very chilly while riding, and I still sweat. Some people just sweat more than others.

Sort of like SPAM: Unsolicited mass emailings. For a good cause, tho.
