Fifty Plus (50+) - Another Use of a Yakima Bicycle Rack!

While sitting behind traffic on the freeway this afternoon at a complete stop a driver in a '07 Nissan 380 Z decided to not brake and rear ended me. The Yakima Rack took the hit along with the trailer hitch and the Z, well it was punched dead center as he went under my truck. The rack was pushed so far up that it knocked the rear window out of the shell. Wow, dead center on the Z!

Thanks guy! Glad my bike wasn't on it!

Hope there were no personal injuries, and good thing your bike wasn't on the rack. The "Z" looks a bit like Mike Tyson after a fight.

I've been rear-ended and totaled twice. I HATE that "BAM-crunch" sound.

One lady told me, "I just forgot to stop."

Don't you just love So Cal freeways. :eek: Your truck doesn't look too hot either. Is it tweaked or is it just the camera angle?

Looks like camera or something... the road is 'tweeked' too.
Glad it is only vehicle damage. That can be fixed with $$$$$. However your psycological state might be another matter.

make sure you ck for real damage to your car... in those types of accidents... transmission, underbody and axles suffer lots and mechanics many times will ovelook this!!!

Substantial racks with solid hitch mounts can often save you (not the other guy) a good deal of damage. That is as long as the bike isn't there. I've lost 2 rack in accidents like this with only a minor scratch to the car.

It's amazing that it took all the force and break only the rear window. That Z looked like it absorbed more of the impact.

We've been rear-ended twice too. The last time by a motorcycle.

I'd like to see the repair estimate on the Z.

Well, after feeling very stiff and visiting a doc on Saturday I am better today. I didn't take the time to inspect the vehicle really well until yesterday and there was more damage than I had thought. The warped look goes with my Fred status and is a result of weird telephone camera.

Looks as though the guy actually got up under the truck and bent the rear bumper in addition to dropping both tail pipes. It will be interesting to see who his insurance company is and how they will want to handle it. I want to see what they want to do before I go with mine, who has already been notified. My auto insurance, USAA, will not cover the rack but my renters would. I am sure the other drivers insurance will take care of it, but it is always a hassle.

Louis, I don't know! The California Highway Patrolman (who witnessed the accident by the way - Thank you Patrolman Robert Rosenfeld, you were courteous, professional and thorough. A wonderful example of the CHP) wanted my information first and then for me to clear the scene stating he would get all the information I needed for insurance purposes, etc. and it would be available at their office in eight to ten days.
