I so want Slipstream to win the TTT

Slipstream now on top after the TTT, 33 seconds ahead of Tinkoff.
Average speed: 53.366 kph / 33.16 mph

Hi!
I'm watching too. I don't have cyclingtv, so I'm watching a live stream I found on http://cyclingfans.com/
Slippies were awsome. I really think they'll win today.

wow, totally impressive by slipstream. I wish I got to watch their run. High Road also had an interesting strategy by allowing three of their guys to burn themselves out and drop off.

Yeah, it almost worked for High Road too.

Only two more teams out there. Silence, which is in the process of dropping half the team. And LPR Brakes.
17:35 CEST
Some Lotto riders were able to respond to the attack of their team-mates, but two riders are struggling to get back. They may not get dinner tonight...
17:36 CEST
Lotto is riding in one line again, postponing their club championships for a more appropriate time.

You know.... thinking about that this is just 3mph above DrW TT boggles my mind. With DrW in the team their avg would have been up by at least another 2mph.
bdcheung
05-10-08, 09:56 AM
You have to compare course-to-course. This TTT course, while not overly technical, did have a fair number of turns in it.
Also take into consideration wind conditions, temperature, etc.
I'm not saying DrW is slow, just that it's a bit of a stretch to say that Slipstream would have been 2mph faster with him.

My guess is that most of the riders would actually go faster in an ITT than the TTT. it is an added discipline to keep all your guys together. Also, 3 other things
1. lots of turns in this course
2. DWJO is running an optimized position that uci riders can't. The drag difference is huge, like a 40w+ at 30mph.
3. 3mph is a big jump in power at that speed. The difference between 23 and 26 is something us mortals can achieve 26 to 29 possible but 30 to 33 is monster power. I would guess using a uci position it is getting very high 400's for the TT. Hopefully slipstream will put there files on the web like in the past.

jrennie,
I completely concur. As you said, the riders really are losing a lot of speed in the turns [especially when there are nine of them in a line].

"My guess is that most of the riders would actually go faster in an ITT than the TTT. it is an added discipline to keep all your guys together." Huh??? You mean on a different course or something, right? - TF

My interpretation of jrennie's statement is that in an ITT, you can focus on your pacing alone and nothing else. In a TTT, you must also focus on maintaining proper separation to the rider in front of you, and being smooth so as to not overly disturb the one behind you.
That mental concentration is an added burden, and can account for a loss of overall speed/power in a team time trial.
It definitely would be interesting to clock an individual versus a team on a given course...

You're kidding, right? Teams are always faster. If they weren't, then the obvious TTT strategy would be to put the fastest guy at the front and just draft off him the whole race.

Bingo... While it is conceivable that an extreme course setup or not having enough riders at the finish might hurt the TTT times, these are fringe cases and not the norm.

Yeah claiming that a protour team can't run a TTT faster than their fastest team member's ITT in identical conditions is a bit far fetched. It's a small margin though.

so if rides get dropped does that mean that they are out of the race? how many have to finish together? where is the time taken (which rider)

The text was a joke.
If a rider gets dropped during a team time trial, then he gets his actual elapsed time and not that of the team.
The team's time is based on the fifth rider to cross the line.

I'm sure team orders were to not wait on anyone today. Kind of like Ga when they sacrificed the jersey for the stage win.

On RAI the Italians were going on about David Millar pulling off with a km to go - but I don't know what they were saying. Anyone know whether it was deliberate - he sacrificed for the team - or whether he blew up?

per Velo News (http://velonews.com/article/76011/giro-ttt-slipstream-s-american-vande-velde-in-the-lead):
Slipstream’s tactics were to drop riders when they tired and not wait for anyone.
Australian sprinter Chris Sutton was the first to fade, then Danny Pate and Pat McCarty lost contact. All three buried themselves in the first half of the course to let the big guns save their legs for the decisive second half.
Millar lost the wheel in the final kilometer, but Vande Velde, Zabriskie, Julian Dean, Magnus Backstedt and Hesjedal rode in together to post the early fastest time.

How many riders can you drop in the TTT and still record a time? I thought in the TDF you could only drop one; when they had a TTT.

Remember the poster out here who went on and on about how Slipstram would get their @$$es handed to them in the Pro Tour? He had it on good authority (a former director in the US) that said how no teams feared Slipstream in the US professional series? Guy was from South Carolina as I recall.
I wish I could remembr who that was...he was "buddies" with the former director at Health Net...
