Those damned ChenShin cheapies let me down again.
Two punctures in 3000 miles. What the hell is going on here?
How far do others ride between punctures? In the old days, I seemed to get loads of flats. Now with these kevlar systems inside the treads, much, much less often.

I ride VELOCIRAPTOR 2.3's and line the tires with an extra tube, slit around the middle, stem cut out to provide an extra layer of rubber. Been doing it for 30 years. You can go two tubes, any more you start getting problems. Anyway, works like a champ.
How about the fact that they've got 3000 miles on them and still going strong? I have bought US$45 name-brand tires (tyres for you Olde English speakers :)) for my road bikes that wore out after 2,500.

3000 huh? That's *impressive*. With the Stelvios and Conti Grand Prix on my Twenty when I first built it I had a run of about 1000 miles bad luck with punctures every 50 or so miles... Then it cooled. Haven't had one in a long time. I'm riding less now as I don't commute every day but even so - I think the bent-wire-on-the-side-of-the-road gods are finally smiling on me.

Actually, I did change the back tyre 1500 miles ago because the tread pattern in the centre was worn and they were so cheap at £6.50 each. I think it would still have been fine though if I'd left it. You don't actually need a tread pattern, which was all that was worn. The front tyre is original though and has covered the full 3000. It has a good bit of tread left. It's funny, some people swear by stelvios and other people hate them after having the kind of experience you had Hugh and like the rash of punctures I got with them.
This is a photo of my 3000 mile Chen Shin front tyre. It's had one puncture at about 2500 mles when I got a thorny twig caught in the forks. It pricked in through the side and missed the kevlar obviously. The treads are pretty tough - once I found a small screw stuck right in the middle of the tread after I'd been annoyed by a rhythmic clicking, but it didn't puncture the tube.
These tyres run at a max of 65psi which is what I pump them to once a fortnight by which time they have dropped to about 40 psi. It typically takes two pumps of the shop pump to put them back to their max pressure.
I replaced the most recently punctured tube with one of your old ones Huw. I'll mend the leak and keep the tube for a spare when I'm satisfied it holds air 100%.

I'm just trying to envisage that trick that Kellyidrummer passed on - splitting te tube right around its cricumference I suppose he means, so that you end up with a piece of rubber that will go inside the tyre under the tread.

It doesn't sound like much of a problem. Really not enough punctures to tell if there really is an issue.

Just cut out the valve out of the old tube, put it inside the tyre, then put the good tube in, inflate, then presto...you have a cheap but very good tyre liner that doesn't need the edges sanded or goes hard. I've been doing that with my MTB and have found it reduces punctures significantly.....I might add, where I MTB is very stony, rugged and hairy, (like me), so punctures are not unusual.

Right, slice the tube at the middle of the area that contacts the rim strip all the way around the tube (inside circumference,) take the stem off and put it in the tire. Inflate the tube till it holds it's shape, put it in the sliced tube, then mount the tire.
Normally, tubes stick to the inside of the tire, so it should be fine in it's position. You can do this with more than one tube in each tire, but no more than two should take care of it. 'Close to about an extra 1/8" of rubber.

Hell of a lot cheaper than so called "puncture proof" systems..and it's a good use for old tubes..or make a sling shot to get the neighbours' cat....sorry, that's the silly side of me coming out again, which nobody here appreciates...ah well back to the other loony forum for me :twitchy::twitchy:
If you got a MTB, Specialized Crossroads, no flats in 5 years. They are a little heavy but they come with over 1/4" of rubber.

Invisiblehand - the title and initial post were written tongue in cheek. I am delighted with these tyres which are very cheap. 2 punctures in three thousand miles seems to me amazing in terms of my previous experience with bike tyres, some of which would go down if you looked at them and didn't smile.

As for tyres, I recommend Schwalbe Marathons - they're on all my bikes (4) and never had a puncture in the 5 years since I got them; and that's on the debris strewn streets of South London.

Catena - A chain or series of things connected with each other.
I am always friendly to felines therefore my tyres remain puncture free....um! seems unlikely.:(
