For me iot is a matter of what I am tring to achieve with the ride I am planning
Recently I have been crushing on Highway 30.
Straight out and back, mostly flat and I think that for the most part it has a better shoulder than I
am used to on my commute. Also there are several opportunities to stop for water or gatorade at stores along the way. Last weekend I made an 80 miler out of my ride by leaving from my house and
using 30 out and back.(I could not resist going over the St. Johns Bridge, just for the view)

My 2 cents worth

Highway 30, thats a great area, I love driving along there but wasn't sure about the biking access.
I just thought of another one that I haven't tried yet but have seen amazing pictures of.. Thurman trail in NW through Forest Park. 11 miles or so, but its gravel and dirt so you would need some thick tires for it. I have a hybrid but I need to get thick tires for it, but that seems like a great ride.. Come to think of it, that trail should be adjacent to Highway 30 if I'm not mistaken.

I wouldn't swim in Blue Lake, and I wouldn't ride along Highway 30, either.

I am thinking that the question was what ride do you like? Yes?
So .....Lets try positive
What is a good ride for you?

The article in the OP suggested that swimming in Blue Lake was a good idea, someone else suggested that riding on Highway 30 was a pleasant experience. I disagree with both assessments. Personally, I'd rather ride up and down Hawthorne Blvd. between SE 12th and SE 50th, bomb the zoo, or ride the inner Springwater Trail. Then again, I don't own a stitch of lycra, so I may not be a 'real' cyclist.

Try mapmyride.com, there are tons of good routes there.

I think the Springwater trail is great.
As for your use of Lycra, Isn't that a personal choise point?
(you know Freedom from Tyranny)
And if you're on a bicycle you are a cyclist.
Just keeping it REAL, ...Dawg.

I tried the Springwater last month, and I thought I was going to come out with shaken baby syndrome. Do I just need to let some air out of my tires before riding past Sellwood or does this trail actually require suspension?

Maybe it would help if you thought of it as training for when you go to Europe to
ride the cobbles!?

Ride what the pros ride on the cobbles. Slap a pair of Vittoria Open Paves on your bike, inflate to 100 psi and feel the bumps melt away!

If you want a REAL ride in Portland, try out this bad boy...

MONGO!

I hate riding on 30, too much traffic and debris in the lane.
If I'm riding to Sauvie Island I'll go via St. John and get on 30 there, so it's only a short way.

Not really into the Springwater much past Sellwood either.

If you can get out to Vancouver, there is a great road near Vancouver lake.

A good ride is start at Haag Lake (near Gaston), ride around the lake, down to Gaston, up to Bald Peak and back to the lake. I believe this is also part of the Livestrong Challenge ride. Great scenery and wonderful climbing. Do it on a clear day and be able to see five peaks from the top of Bald Peak.
