I am too punked out from the road race this AM. I have another hard 50 mile ride tomorrow with the Nyack Ride boys. I will try to get it into the woods this week.

Why? What is your experience with them?

Frogs are okay IHMO, but that is it.
#1 the mechanism that makes them work works of a little piece of foam which is less than ideal.
I was a HUGE fan of free float until I got an MTB. Now not at all. I found it much harder to get out at an unexpected time with a lot of float (I had frogs at one point, but was using bebops at the time when I got an MTB). I switched to egg beaters and was much happier on the trails. But to each their own.

As far as conti's . . . what is the general consensus on them as a brand? I ask because it is like they have some monopoly over Indy. Several of the main LBS carry all Conti's with maybe 1 other tire.

Fly Ti MTB Ride Report: 5 miles of fire road today (took the dog out for a run) but the new cassette (11-32) is GREAT, the new tires are GREAT, the Fly Ti is GREAT, climbs fantastic, handles amazingly well on technical stuff, the shock feels perfect (may be noodly for hard core MTB racer dudes, but that's not me) and overall couldn't be more pleased. Those Contis are a nice balance between everything I want in an MTB tire, relatively light @ 525 grams, they handle loose mud/sand/technical conditions well.

Here's the big difference between the Fly Ti and my old Jamis 853: on the Fly Ti you feel as if you have suspension under you in the rear as well. Really has a great ride. The Ti feels more responsive. The SID fork feels more supple and subtle than the old Manitou carbon (c. 1999). XTR shifting is still outstanding, that hasn't changed. I am thrilled. Thanks BD.

Like the Frogs very much, don't have a lot of experience with other MTB pedals. All the critiques of this stuff may be quite valid, but it is all relative. I don't have the access to better gear like MTB Action reviewers, or the interest in finding the best MTB gear like I might when it comes to roadie stuff. Bear in mind this 'noodly' SID fork replaces a '99 Manitou, and this Ti bike is so far better than anything I've ever had access to.

It's like road bike stuff: a local LBS owner says 'once you get over three grand none of it sucks'. That's mostly true for MTB stuff I'm sure, and any hard tail from 2009 is bound to be better in many respects than the TEN YEAR OLD bike it replaces. Which is my situation. And the new bike is WAY better. It's a total blast. Forgot how much I enjoy riding in the woods. I even liked the limited technical stuff today (stream, wet rocks, mud, sand, etc.). Much easier on the new bike, it handles so perfectly.

I thought float was the shiznit until I got on a trail. I like to be much more connected to the bike. I feel like if I have to unweight the rear end I am more in control with much less float. Also I think I can get clipped out quicker, which I have found to be rather important on a trail to dab here and there.

I'm even going less float again on road bikes.

More float on a MTB is asking for trouble.

Interestingly, I already prefer much less float on the road already. I am eggbeater variant on all bikes, road, MTB and my spin bike in my basement.

Looks okay, I can't quite get my head around the dual cup holder look though. It's just my little quirk. Okay, one of several. I carry anything I need on my back via Camelbak. Just too much clutter messing up nice clean lines. But, hey, I 'm weird, enjoy your bike.

Honestly I don't know as I don't follow the sport. Maybe they do. I just think it's odd what companies choose to name thier bikes. One of Cannondale's new bikes is called the Moto even though there's no Motor on it.
