Well, no sex, drugs and murder, actually...that I know of :p Sorry!
For those of you who don't follow animation news, strange and bizarre things have been happening at the Walt Disney company!
The first shocker came back in August, when Disney announced the closing down of their California animation studio. They claimed that people were more interested in 3D animation, the Disney animators were given training to switch over to computer animation, and all the traditional animation equipment was put on auction.
Unfortunately, the company expected that few of the animators would be able to make the switch to 3D, and contracted out most of the work on their next film to an outside company. So when ALL of the animators successfully completed the computer animation class, they were forced to compete for the few remaining in-house jobs.
New shock struck last week, when Disney also announced the closing of their Florida animation studio! The studio was in the middle of working on a movie, and the animators had been led to believe that all was well, and they would continue working, though evidence shows that Disney secretly made the plans to shut them down some time ago.
There is also some speculation that Disney intended to set up Brother Bear to be a failure...it was suddenly ordered to be ready for release 6 months ahead of schedule, and was released on a Saturday instead of the usual Friday, which would make the first-weekend box-office receipts lower. This would have provided justification for closing down the animation studio entirely. (Some people believe Michael Eisner is downsizing to boost stock values, in an intention to sell out the company)
This pretty much spells the end of Disney feature animation, apart from the cheap overseas crap they put on TV and direct-to-video sequels.
Then, just a couple of days ago, Roy Disney himself, and a couple of other Eisner critics were forced off the board of directors immediately after reaching the mandatory retirement age. Roy wrote a nasty resignation letter, claiming that Eisner was destroying the Disney reputation and company, and calling for his ousting.
The remaining board members have made statements in support of Eisner (who apparently wants over half a billion dollars as his severance pay if he leaves.) Some speculate that the statements were made merely to pacify Eisner, and there may indeed be a plan to give him the boot. Others think that Eisner has solidified his position by ousting his main opponents.
Meanwhile, Roy Disney has been contacting some of the companies Disney has been trying to do business with, and they are reportedly on his side. Rumor says that Pixar and Jim Henson Productions are currently refusing to enter into new agreements with the Disney company as long as Eisner heads it.
