Road Cycling - spoke count vs. spoke gauge

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Which matters most in wheel stiffness? Which would be better: a 32 spoke butted or a 28 spoke sraight?
which wheel? front or rear? what kind of lacing pattern?
For the same weight, the more spokes the better. But stiffness doesn't really matter... and fewer spokes is better for aero.

Standard butted spokes are just as strong as straight gauge... stronger according to some people.
Spoke count, rim strength, and proper spoke tension make the wheel durable (but not necessarily stiff)
I thought more spokes were better for aero...

Quite the contrary.

You might have a point. Infinite spokes would be like a disc... which is pretty aero. On the other hand, I think zero spokes would be aero also.

or a huge disadvantage depending on cross winds
What I want to know is which handles drive torque better.

I don't feel like calculating it right now, but the amount of wind-up will be tiny with 28 or 32 spokes... especially if it is a stiff hub with large flanges and is 3x on both sides.
Use butted spokes... better fatigue strength.

I'd say 48 spokes laced 5 cross handle torque the best, but that's overkill unless you're a pair of clydesdales doing tandem track sprints. :D

I read on Sheldon's site theat the trailing spokes on the drive side should be on the inside of the hub flange for reinforcement while under torque. SO I built all my wheels that way and no problems.
My rear wheels are Velocity Deep V's, 32 staight gauge 3X and they are stiff. Too heavy for the weight weenies though!:D
