'n so.

I was talking to a silver haired friend of mine who told me that on the farm in the winter, they used to wrap wire around their wheels/tires for traction on the ice and snow.

...and I thought. Why the heck not?! Farmers are so often the mothers of invention. That sure sounds workable. No more $40 knobbies. No more do-it-yourself suicide roofing screw tires.

This could be the sheeet, man. He said you just take some wire and wrap it around your tires/rims and in-between the spokes. Why didn't I think of that? I wonder if you could package spools of wire and call it bicycle traction wire and sell it for ten times the going rate of regular wire.

I could be RICH. No wait, I just told everybody on the forums. OK. let's keep this OUR secret and we can all be MILLIONAIRES (me first)!

Great, as long as you don't have rim brakes. And I think that people who bought a bike with hub style brakes are going to ante up the money for studded tires.

$40 knobbies?? Sheesh, I paid $90 for Nokians :D.

Sorry! I hope I didn't shatter your millionare dreams!! :o ;)

Hey!! They added new smileys! LOL

First impressions are that this guy has a colorful life. !roofing screw tires!

I don't use knobbies. Haven't tried them but can't imagine them helping with traction on ice. On cars winter grip tires on the drive wheels of course are a good idea but getting stuck on a bike because my rear tire is spinning is the least of my worries.

The studded tires would be a help on ice but a nuisance anywhere else. I suppose it's possible studded tire makers will someday get a buck off of me, but hopefully only if they pry it out of my cold dead hands. (A few more details in sig winter biking article.)

best wishes, lloyd
