Hey All.

I was thinking on my ride in today about the feasibility of puting on "training wheels" off of the rear wheel to prevent spills on ice and snow during the winter. This isn't much of an issue in Tucson, AZ, but do any of you from colder climates use anything? I may be moving in a couple of years and want to be able to commute year-round there too. It seems to me that if you used high-quality rubber wheels (from a wheel barrow or wagon) you could ride in ice and snow too. Thoughts?

I ride an All Terrain GT...i just switch from Hutchinson skinny's in the summer to Performancebike semi-slicks in the winter--nubbies on the sides, smooth in the middle.

An effortless ride through the softpack...until you realize the snow is jamming the gears--a plastic puddy knife comes in handy ....;)

I don't add anything like this. If your sliding and your balance is off, chances are your gonna go down anyway due to your center of gravity. Studded tires are quite popular for winter riding. Nokian seems to be the most widely used brand.

What he said and add: Winter riding will sharpen your bike handling skills faster than any other routine on or off the bike. If you ride and go out in the snow your instincts will take over in short order. Yep, you're going to crash, it's inevitable. But you are going to be a bicycle handling fool in no time flat.
