Sorry to hear about your crash.
How did it happen?

Side note: The other night I put some new pedals on my MTB. And silly me I took it out for a spin in total darkness (circular drivaway). I crashed 2 times as it was totally dark (usually some light). I will not do that again!

Tom Stormcrowe

i'm actually not sure. I don't really remember......

I remember a little instability and then I was on the ground trying to think straight. I limped over to a gas station and didn't even remember calling my wife. The clerk was extremely helpful.....loaded my bike in the van, I remember that.

On another note, I thought I hurt bad last night......

My wife had to help me out of bed this morning....I was so stiff I couldn't move. I'm currently having to use one of her canes to move around the house. I also pulled a muscle in my groin on the hit or somethig. all i know is I was somewhere north of 25MPH when I went down, I was in a push phase.....trying to max the HR.

Well, I certainly achieved that....Sorry to hear about your crash.

I do indeed feel your pain! It was Specialized that mailed me a 20% off coupon, sorry charlie. I imagine Bell might do something similar. I just emailed customer service on their web page. I told them I bounced my coconut off the curb and without their helmet I'd be lying in a bed at the VA. Not a lie!

Feel better Tom!

Ouch!

I guess that is how crashes go? One second riding, next on the ground in pain.

Here's to a speedy recovery!

bdinger

OUCH! it's definitely a bad week in the clyde forum. Here's hoping you heal soon!

vXhanz

Hope you recover quickly! I hope the memory laps is due to the event happening so quickly... otherwise you may want to get checked out by a Dr. to see if you rattled your brain a bit too hard, even with a helmet.

Tom Stormcrowe

No signs of concussion this morning. It's very likely traumatic blockage going on, and not brain swelling. No headache, believe it or not, no other symptoms of concussion. The helmet sure did it's job.....

Not AGAIN:bike2:

This the same shoulder you trashed last year? Man, you got some bad mojo happening, better get ye to a church and get some of the old prayer warriors on the case! Otherwise your gonna do your self in real good one of these times.

Glad you're OK, Tom. There must have been something in the water yesterday.

I was doing a couple cool down laps after my race yesterday and spotted Cheri walking on the road back to where our truck was parked...so I came up behind her to give her a pat as I road by...slowly. Well she must have heard me and stopped to turn around, causing me to brake and swerve to avoid her...I hit the curb and teetered for a few seconds trying to unclip, before falling down and going boom. Perfectly funny end to a perfectly funny race!

Tom Stormcrowe

Yeah, the same shoulder. Not the rotator cuff though at least, it's actually in the meat of the trapezoid muscle and along the top of my shoulder in the muscle. DEEP, deep bruising. Same with the hip. Got an0ther look at the helmet this morning.....sure glad i had it on..The helmet is a write off. Better that than the skull!!!! Given the impact point, etc, the ER Dr told me that without it, I'd likely be either dead or critical from a skull fracture and traumatic brain injury. Cycling IS a dangerous sport, yeah, but man I love it!

At least yours was zero speed. ;) I was in a sprint. :p

Man I hit hard.

Niel F, Tom, I hope you all heal quickly so you can get back on your horses. There is this saying that things always happen in threes. So the rest of you Clydes be careful. Unless there is a third out there we didn't hear about yet.

Tom Stormcrowe

Chipcom was the three...with his measly little zero speed tipover ;)

Naw, live fast, die young and leave a beautiful but bruised up corpse. ;) (You can be young at 95, byvthe way. ;))

Sorry to hear about the crash Tom. If you trust them and know one that is good try the chiropractor. I had injured my hip in a low speed crash and he helped jump start the healing process.

Tom Stormcrowe

All in all, I came out pretty good.....

Bottom pics below the helmet have a bit of gore.

Wow, that's a bruise! Third day is the sticker on that shoulder. Heal quick...

I'm not reading anymore of these I crashed stories... talk about a jinx.

I just had my wife pick me up because I couldn't unclip on a hill and managed to fall. I'm still debating going to the ER due to the pain and swelling in my wrist and elbow.

Looks like my wife has made a decision... I'll let you know how it goes when I get back.

Tom, I couldn't find the actual replacement policy online for bell helmets, except in their owners manual pdf located here (http://www.bellbikehelmets.com/downloads/Bell_Bike_OwnersManual_USCAN.pdf). Hope this helps, and heal fast!

TS,

Two comments:

1) hydrocodone -- always keep a few around. good stuff. that should behelping the pain.
2) THAT LEG PIC -- dude, looks like a doag was gnawing on that thing. yuck!

Glad it was not worse....that helmet seems to have taken a pretty good hit.
As others have said...painkillers and Anti-inflammatories! And be careful out there.

 Dang Tom. Wish you a fast recovery and rubber side down for your future rides!

Take care Tom.
Faster bikes = harder crashes

Hope you get better Tom! I'm a new guy here. Three months ago my right leg was like that. I was doing a few laps around the nearby park in the rain. I liked to ride in the warm rain. As I was going over a wooden bridge, this jogger comes around the corner on my side of the path. I put on the brakes and swerve to avoid smacking into him. Wooden bridges are slippery when wet! I slid one way and stopped when my leg hit the bridge railing and my bike went the other way. The jogger stopped to help me back on my feet. I would sit with my leg slightly elevated 'cause it throbbed for about two days. Ibuprofin and my Bell helmet are my best friends. Get better soon!

I don't understand what I see in the first picture. It looks like a broken collarbone, severely displaced. It could be an illusion, I don't know. I looks like the broken bone is pointing forward and tenting your skin. Is that from the previous injury?

JimF22003

I hope the Dr. gave you some advice about watching for blood clots in those legs...

Good luck with your recovery!

Tom Stormcrowe

no, it's a swollen muscle. The collarbone is intact. It's also a bit of an illusion from the sling holding the arm up.

You too? Team clyde isn't looking so good right now.

Hope your alright, let us know.

I'll be heading to the bike shop[ tomorrow to have them take a look....it's still in the van, still. The tires and wheels seemed to be straight rolling it to the station to call home. I didn't see any obvious damage. I think the pavement just had some irregularity that threw me.

There's definitely some validity to what you say about muscle mass protecting a person somewhat...;) All the aeight work, etc I did over the winter probably is what prevented it from being more serious. I've already got more mobility in the hip.The shoulder (Trapezoid muscle specifically), into the neck is really sore and mobility there is very restricted right now. I can't really do much except wait for the swelling and inflammation in the shoulder goes down and start doing rehab exercises again.

OK, good. I don't have any muscles there, so it looked weird to me. The swelling and bruising (both legs?) looks pretty ugly, but I expect you will be fine. Looks panful. Good thing only the helmet was fractured, not your skull or anything else. :)

I can add another crash to the pile. I was on a trail in Columbus, Oh. I rounded a turn to go uphill and the rear overshifted and locked the rear wheel up, was down before I could unclip. A little knee and elbow rash and a big bruised ego. Heal up fast Tom

Tom Stormcrowe

You too!

Been a tough week on the Clyde Paddock, huh?

andrelam

That looks like it HURTS! I hit my shoulder hard this winter when the rear wheel descided to loose grip. I got my foot down, but my shoes at much less grip and the studded tires so I went down on my shoulder. The first week I had a hard time with simple things like getting dressed because the shoulder hurt so much... I FEEL your pain.:( In your 2nd week the body is usually starting to heal a lot, and the bad pain should start to subside. By the 3rd week you will problably still have some scarry looking deep colored bruises left, but hopefully by then the pain will be a a fraction of what you are feeling today.

Good luck and heal fast!

André

Tom I hope that leg does not hurt as bad as it looks. Reminds me of the movie Payback when they are taking the sledge to Mel Gibson's toe's. "Starting to looking like hamburger"

It certainly sounds like a concussion, with anterograde and retrograde amnesia. Any neurologists on BF? Anyway if you are okay now a day later perhaps you are over the worst of it, but don't forget about those sneaky subdural hematomas.

Ouch... glad it wasn't worse than it was. Good thing you were wearing a helmet!! Take care of yourself and heal up quick!
