Greetings! Those of us hanging out in the Greater Boston Roll Call thread (come join us there!) have been bandying about the idea of a meet-up at the Deluxe Town Diner in Watertown for their famous breakfast offerings. Anyone in the Boston area is welcome to join us.

At breakfast, we will likely discuss the possibility of a group ride at a later date. Due to various levels of fitness (because of different opportunities for training, etc.), the group ride idea needs some discussion to work it out.

I put out a date, but so far, only SherbornPeddler has responded to my 5/31 suggestion, and he can't make it.

I would rather not have this arrangement process drag out too long, so here's a suggestion: If you would like to be at the breakfast, please respond with a suggestion of a couple of dates. The date that has the most overlap with the most people wins.

If someone else has a better idea, feel free to jump in!

My date suggestions: Sat. morning, [EDIT:] 6/7 or 6/14

I might be in for a 6/7 or 6/14.

Who is going to do the CRW's P2P on 6/18?

Hey BostonRoadee, I could do either 6/7 or 6/14, but my preference would be 6/8. Looking forward to it!

BostonRoadee

That's two votes in. Anyone else? Sherborn, SpokenWord?

BTW, folks, please try to start another thread if you want to discuss other events. It's been hard enough herding everyone here into a common date! I'm in hopes that this thread will make it possible by simplifying things. Thanks.

Either 6/7 or 6/14 are fine for me so far.

BostonRoadee

Excellent -- four of us so far for 6/7 (with a 6/14 back-up). Deburn, hope that's not TOO inconvenient. It's not been easy trying to get everyone on the same page...

sherbornpeddler

I'm plotting a good route to ride over should my COO grant a BR* parole and the privileged, ruling class sleep in on a non-school night. We are talking about 8 AM-ish ? For me, looks like a straight shot on Rt. 16 east; just before Mt. Auburn Cemetery (avoiding a long term visit there as long as possible).

BostonRoadee that's doable.

SherbornPeddler - that's funny about your COO - though I thought wives are CEOs? Unless you're the CEO?

daveydave

Both dates look pretty good to me. At least at this point.

We're equal partners. Anytime we have a disagreement we compromise. She says, "north", I say, "south"; we compromise and go....north..:o

Sherborn, hope you can make it, wouldn't be the same without you. 8 am is possible, but I would prefer more like 9 -- what do you guys think?

As of now, since folks are saying both dates are do-able, why don't we take the earlier one? 6/7, that is. The Giro will be recently ended, so we can at least have that as a conversation starter! (I've been watching the Italian cable feed most days -- fun stuff.)

Really glad to hear so many can make it -- this could be good.

Sherborn, hope you can make it, wouldn't be the same without you. 8 am is possible, but I would prefer more like 9 -- what do you guys think? you probably know how the diner can be on a weekend. Hellapacked. With that said, I'm all for a 9am meetup if that makes it easier for folks who are coming in from outside Watertown.

It's also important for everyone to be on time, as they won't seat incomplete parties. No using the "traffic was horrible coming in" excuse ;)

Also, for something a little less formal -- is anyone planning on attending the Redbones Massbike party on Monday? Want to stage an impromptu meet up there?

sherbornpeddler

SW and BR, youse folks are great to move this along!
For me, road traffic, eggs and coffee are all better earlier.
Resolution?
1. On the other hand recounting Giro stories is great anytime.
2. I'm used to my aforementioned compromises.

Re Massbike: Having the equivalent of an oral lobotomy a few hours earlier, my dentist advises I forego Redbones Monday night.

deburn

BostonRoadee, I'd prefer 9am too.

SherbornPeddler, I like what you said about being equal partners! I had this idealistic view that we really should be equal partners - maybe why I'm not married any more:D:thumb:

Spokenword, that's a great idea about Redbones. I was thinking of going but decided not to go because I wont know anyone there (i'm very shy:D) but if you (and anyone else) is going I would too. If that's the case maybe we can start another thread so as not to change the focus of this one? LMK

Hey, folks --

SP, Sounds like most folks are geared toward 9:00 more than 8:00. But perhaps we all could settle on 8:30? Definitely would give us the edge over the morning crowd. SW is so right -- that place can be hella packed, and it might be frustrating to get all of us there at 9 and then not sit until 9:25 or so (especially with the need for a larger table).

SW: The Redbones meet-up is a great idea; I'm going to look into that and then reply. I wouldn't mind if that topic moved to another thread... it's been a bit tricky getting everyone on the same page (har, har) re: the breakfast meet-up, but the dedicated thread has helped lots.

Hi everyone, newbie here, and yet another based in Watertown. I've only been biking for, ohh, I'd say a week and a half. I'm doing it mostly for commuting to work, but also just loving it because its fun.

And I have to admit, I've only commuted to work once so far because I'm out of shape and need to work into it. Mill St + Concord Ave + Spring St = TOUGH!!

I'm free both the proposed days. I'm sorry, haven't read through all the posts yet to see if the date has been set. I look forward to meeting some new people and enjoying the best pancakes around!

Greetings, hipersons, and welcome. Yes, that route is tough; I ride it frequently, but it originally took a while to be able to without strain. Build up slowly, and before you know it, you'll be acing that hill that comes at the end of the flat section (where the golf course is on your right, as you're heading west). Short but steep...

We'd be happy to have your company at breakfast. Stay tuned.

BostonRoadee

OK, folks, since I've not heard any responses to my last proposal, I'm assuming that means there are no objections. :) So, we're looking at Sat., June 7, 8:30 am, at the Deluxe Town Diner in Watertown.

Again, if that poses a problem for someone, let us know, and we'll see if we can work around it. But for now, that seems to be the best time for all concerned.

This should be fun!

hipersons

Thanks for the encouragement! I did my second ride to work today, and I'm already getting further up the hills than last time. Also, I was able to travel, on average, almost a whole MPH faster. Progress is fun.

deburn

hey guys, I'm not going to make in on the 7th :(:cry:

I signed up for an inline skating "camp" that was supposed to be yesterday but it got canceled because of the weather, and it's been rescheduled for the 7th. These guys, Camp Rollerblade, do this at best once a year in Boston, so if I didnt agree to the 7th I'd be waiting for a long time...

Bummer! Well..I'll just wait for the next time we get together...

BostonRoadee

deburn, that's a real bummer. Very sorry to hear you can't make it! We'll post a report here.

GRedner

I'm going to be out of town :-\

BostonRoadee

I'm sorry to hear that GRedner.

EVERYBODY:

This might be a good time to do a roll call to see who's coming to breakfast this Sat., 6/7. Could you just post real quick if you plan to be there?

I'm sure looking forward to meeting you folks.

Once again, it's 8:30 a.m. at the Deluxe Town Diner on Mt. Auburn St. in Watertown. Web site is right here (http://deluxetowndiner.com/home.html).

I'm still in. My girlfriend and I have to prep for a charity century for diabetes (Tour De Cure Gloucester - if you feel like supporting, please click here (http://main.diabetes.org/site/TR/TourdeCure/TDC005018030?px=4168832&pg=personal&fr_id=4990)) so I probably won't be able to do a group ride like we planned, but I'm still down for breakfast.

sherbornpeddler

I'm available. I can ride over, say hello and have a quick bite but will need to leave by 9:15.

BostonRoadee

Glad to hear we have at least two in.. anyone else? Daveydave? Others?

Just to clarify, I don't think we ever planned to ride *this* Saturday. (Not that I remember, anyway...) I did raise the idea of discussing over breakfast a ride at a future date.

I'll post a photo of myself if I can a) remember to, b) get my wife's camera to ever synch with my computer, and c) figure out how to post photos on BF. It probably won't be *too* hard to figure out who we are, but it wouldn't hurt to have a little help...

BostonRoadee

Okay, friends, I'm going to try loading a pic of me with this post, so's you can locate me at the diner on Sat. a.m. Look forward to meeting you all, and talking BIKE for an hour over good eats.

So far:

Have I missed anyone? If you are just now deciding to come, you're welcome -- just let us know here that you're coming.

my girlfriend might be in attendance as well depending on whether or not the prospect of sweet potato pancakes beat out the allure of an extra hour of sleep.

She's very welcome! Hope she enjoys bike talk...

well, she's been a car-free bike commuter for longer than I've been riding a bike; and we started dating after enrolling in the same bike mechanics class at Bikes Not Bombs , and typically our birthday gift exchanges have been like this:

She'll buy me a repair stand
I'll buy her a bike trailer
She'll organize a fundraiser amongst friends to pay for my custom ANT Club Racer
I'll make a generator wheel for her and bundle it with a dynamo headlight and taillight.

So, yeah, she's fine with bike talk ;)

Though, unfortunately, it seems that sleep will win out and she'll pass on breakfast. 60 hour work weeks tend to do that.

BostonRoadee

Now I wish she'd be there.

:)

Put me down as a maybe. I'll look for you there.

BR, I have to bail out. My wife has to work tomorrow (ER nurse) so I have kid duty.
Sorry.

Sorry.

Boy, I'm sorry to hear that. I missed out meeting you at the Major Taylor event, and now this! Drag -- hope we can get something else going at some point.

Right now, SW and I are the only definites, but I'm pretty sure DaveyDave wanted to come, and sounds like Buzzman and Hipersons might be there -- perhaps others I'm not thinking of right now. Look forward to it, folks.

daveydave

I'm not going to be able to make it in the morning. I didn't even realize that my niece had her graduation tomorrow. I thought it was Sunday. :-(

yeah, a bit disappointed that I won't be able to check out the diner and fuel up. It looks like it's going to be perfect. I'm still up for any other weekend or trying to get together some nights.

Have a good time all! Let me know how it goes.

daveydave

BostonRoadee

Sorry to hear that, daveydave -- bummer that we don't get to meet and you'll miss the fun.

BTW, fish oil capsules seems to be doing wonderful things for my knees! Thanks for the tips.

Off to the diner!

buzzman

egads! I missed it!

I'm off for a bike ride to Concord and thereabouts- if you're out that way look for a tall guy with a yellow jersey ( no, I have not won the TDF ), yellow helmet and a classic steel frame- midnight blue.

Sorry I missed it- hope it was fun. Maybe next time.

BostonRoadee

Well, you guys missed some fun -- bike talk, stories of rides and how we got started riding, and the best pancakes in Watertown. It was only SpokenWord and me, but we sure enjoyed ourselves (well, I should speak for myself). Plus, I got to see his ANT custom bike -- a beautiful piece of work.

I was really sorry you guys couldn't be there -- would have been fun to meet you.

SW opined that we'd be more likely to have everyone show up if we organized an actual ride. I'm all for it. Who wants to be the organizer? Myself, I spent three months (that's right -- three) talking up this meeting and arranging it, so I'm off-duty for a while. But I sure would like to ride with you guys, if you can stand to ride as little as 30 mi. or a little more. (I'm building back up after knee recovery. My distance is increasing each week.) If we get a lot of us, we might have to ride moderately to allow for all abilities.

Anyone up for such a thing?

buzzman

I'm all for a ride. But to save ourselves any stress around "organizing" a ride how about turning this thread into a sticky for ride posts. In other words if you're going for a ride you post it. Post the route and the time you'll start and if someone can join you all the better. Maybe we'll need some way of recognizing one another when we're out there- I'm willing to tatoo my left calf with a large "BF"- anyone else?;)

Today was a great day for a ride. I ended up doing a 43 mile loop with a nice swim stop at Walden Pond.

I'm thinking of a repeat of the ride tomorrow. I start in Newton Corner, loop out to Concord via Weston and swing by Walden on the loop home, which runs by the Decordova. It takes me about 2:20 without the stop at Walden. Average speed about 18.1. I'm willing to slow down and capable of kicking it up a notch but a hammerfest is not quite where I'm at right now.

I'll check this thread to see if anyone wants to go. I'll probably depart about 9:30 am.

I would have jumped at the chance to go for at least part of that, but I did my "long" weekend ride today (I was inspired by SpokenWord's tales of randonneuring at breakfast). As I've said, I'm DYING to ride with people. Sad to say that the loop you describe is long (and fast) for me right now, though maybe not in a few weeks. It sounds like you and I live right near each other (right near the Perkins School, I am) and ride the same areas. I ride through Lincoln/Sandy Pond Lane/Baker Bridge Road all the time. Also Tower Road in Lincoln, etc. Stopped at Walden just the other day (nothing like a swim to refresh those legs!!). So it would be "keen" if we could organize a spin... :)

If I feel astonishingly zippy tonight, I'll post and let you know. My wife wants to go out --hmm... Hope I have energy!

As to casual ride posts, I think it's a great idea, but for my part, it's often much less likely to happen if I can't plan for it. With that said, go ahead and post 'em, and let's see how it works out. (Might I suggest starting a separate thread for the purpose? It might draw more attention and be more manageable, as well as less confusing to newcomers.)
