Got the new Shimano Canti brakes

Just got back from a short test ride with the new Shimano Cantis. They seem to have more stopping power than the Avid shorty 6 which I had on before. They also have a little more pad adjustment. I went with the longer cable carrier and everything seems to be just right. To top it off they just plain look better than the Avids did. I love it when a plan comes together...... :D

No, but I didn't have that much problem with the Avids squealing either. Try some Cool Stop pads.

Been there, done that. Doesn't seem to help. Tried adjusting the toe-in. Cleaned the rims. Front brake still squeals like a Nazgul's horse.

My front Avid squeals too.

Mine squealed like a banshee too. I toed it in but at the same time angled it across the rim a bit. It seemed to have stop the wail for now.

These new cantis are definitely better than the avids. I got a set of them on a new bianchi we built the other day and I was quite impressed.

Has anyone who used to have sqealing Avids, installed the new Shimano Cantis and had the squeal dissappear?

grease all the washers, bolt (on the pad), and brake stud. i angled the pads across the rim and on the rear brake i reversed the left and right pads. If toe-ing in does work try toe-ing out. try to get the pads to touch the rim at the same time. i never thought i'd get these things to not squeal, but finally they have stopped squealing and work fine.

I had shorty 6s on two 'cross bikes. Once I got the toe-in right, the squeaking went
away. I'm sure Kool-Stop Salmon would have been a quicker solution, but there are not available locally. When the pads on my remaining Avids go, I'll order them from Harris.

I have Avid Shorties on my CrossCheck. The squealed like mad, until I adjusted both the toe-in (front-to-back angle) and the camber (top-to-bottom angle) and now they are completely silent, even in the rain, and work great. They're nice and light, too.
