Mother's day on the trail..............what was I thinking. One foot cliped in (right) one foot unclipped. 6 peds going in 13 different directions milling around the gate at the end of the trail. I can't get through even at 2mph so I stop, calmly place the unclipped foot on the ground to wait and.................................from my left, a screaming 2 1/2 foot tall ped pushing a plastic shopping cart rams it into my bike. Over I go, away go the peds. As they leave, the small one turns to look at me sitting there under my bike. Quickly there is a flash of the deepest red in each of his eyes.

WC Fields had a good attitude toward children compared to me.

Civilization has not got long to go.

I came to the realization on the trail today, there are many more of them than there are of us and they are winning.

You see a problem. I say "Count your blessings."

That kids poor mother has to put up with him all day every day. You, on the other hand, had but one short encounter.

I hate falling but I love the ability to pull up on the pedals. I have found that once I get stopped with one foot unclipped that it is very easy to unclip the other foot so that no gust of wind or whatever is going to put me into the dirt. Did I mention that I hate falling? It hurts the old bones to the point that I am just a nervous wreck until I get both feet unclipped. When it comes to little kids I unclip and walk by them until I know that they can't get tangled up in the bike. This may not all ways be practicle but falling sucks.

My worst crash happened when an inattentive mother pushed her little bundle of joy (my name was different) on a Big Wheel right in front of me on a MUP. Almost did a header, but stood up on the front wheel and went over to the right. Children are dangerous.

+1 on riding clipped when children are visible, don't do it. Children are too unpredictable. The rule is when children are in sight feet unclipped and hands on the brakes. There may be exceptions to this rule...you may have lived one of them.

Arrogance..........I was too lazy to unclip both feet. This is the source of most club tombay entries.

If I have learned anything over the years of falling at 0mph while clipped in it has been to not extend the arm or hand to catch yourself. Remarkably little damage done except a cut to the knee and that was protecting the bike....:)

Someone above mentioned the danger of riding on mothers day.........and in the afternoon at that. My observation of yesterday was extended families bumbling around in the country. The scary things were the hordes of SUV's parked at the trailhead. Those same PEDs were also "drivers"........OMG.

As we were driving to our Mothers' Day lunch, we passed a family wobbling along on the sidewalk. Three kids on pink bikes and two parents without helmets. Ms. Slim, who does not ride, said (referring to the father), "Isn't his seat too low?" :lol:

Its because he doesn't ride enough that his seat is too low.
