Hello, I've been looking for a decent road bike to get me around okay until I can get a steady job going (I'm only 16). My mom's willing to pay up to $150 for one, which isn't much, so I think brand new's out of the question. But there's a bike shop near by (N Long Beach) that has the following used bikes for sale. Can you guys give me your input on it? I'm just looking for something that rides well, and all the bikes donated here are lubed and tuned. So give me your input?

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/bik/674725954.html (The one I'm thinking of most, though I'll definitely need to pitch in $15 for the tires)

Also, how many centimeters should I look for? I'm about 5'11.

These bikes are all different sizes. You need to know what size you need before doing anything else. Based on your height and not knowing anything else I would guess a 55-56 cm would work.

Regarding the bikes - keep looking. $150 is a tough budget but better things show up on Craigslist The Clubman is a heavy dog. I know - I had one just like it.

Ah, I see. Yeah, 5'11, skinny...what else?

How about the Bicycle Kitchen? Anyone heard anything about that? If not, basically, they have project bikes , which are bikes that are donated, usually frames, and you mix and max from recycled parts and they show you how to put them on and stuff. Should I go there?

So you're going to be looking for a 55-56cm frame. You're going to be better off spending a little more money up front than getting a ragged out old bike that has had the wheels ridden off of it.

I like old bikes, so the fact that a bike is 10-20 or even more years old is not that big of a deal. But things have to be taken care of. Any old bike will probably need lines and cables, a chain, and a good bath. You're talking about 1 days work to take a bike from pretty gnarly to a good rider.

I recommend getting a steel bike that is of good quality. When you find something in your price range, Google it and see if it's something you really want to spend time with. An old Schwinn, Fuji, Raleigh, etc. can be a really nice ride and very close to as fast as a new bike if the engine is up to the task.

More expensive, but a _much_ better option. This is actually a pretty sweet bike. If it were my size and if my wife wouldn't shoot me for dragging another bike home I might grab it.

So how much would be a good price? I don't really know where to start. Craigslist has a few good ones but they're usually just out of my range, which isn't good. I'd say the most I could possibly do is $200. Can any be had for that price?

try Salvation Army, you can get a roadie from them for like 60 bucks, then drop more money into getting it road ready. You might have to go to a few of them to find something decent enough to throw money at it.

I have a 56 cm Fuji Team that I am planning to sell. I was hoping to get $400, but if you can scrape up $300 I would let it go. It is a 2003, in very good shape. Ultegra components: Check it out. (http://www.fujibikes.com/road/bike.asp?category_short_name=road&myArray=1,2,3,4,5,19,6,7,8,18,16,9,10,20,11,12,13,17,15,14,54,55,56,57&myArrayID=4&yr=2003#)

Where are you located? I am in the Palm Springs area. It is a good bike.

I'm in Carson, CA. So that's a bit of a drive. But looks nice!

PM me if you are interested. It is a good bike. I just got a new bike (thanks Felt1!), so I need to pare down, plus it is too big for me.

This would be a fantastic bike for a new rider- great frame and components, modern gear that has no doubt been very well cared for. A great bike to learn and grow on. It would be more than enough for some time to come.

Don't waist your money on that pig. Plus that bike is for a GIANT! Serious hit up Shnuddy for that Fuji, what a sweet deal and a modern drive train.

at 5'11 you probably want a frame a bit bigger than 56, though it depends on the geometry of the particular bike and your own geometry.

If you're tenacious you can probably find something reasonable on craigslist where you can go and try it on and maybe negotiate a little for it. You're probably going to find a bike from someone who bought one and never rides and and finally decided to get rid of it.

I'd love the Fuji, but I don't have that kind of money for a bike just yet. But yeah, the Regent isn't too good for a starter? I'm just looking something to hold me over a while til I can save up for something even better, and that won't get stolen.

Hi,

You can get a bike MUCH better than the ones you've listed for $150. I can understand that you don't have more money than that, but you need someone who knows something about bikes to work with you searching craigslist or ebay.

I've sold bike MUCH better than those you're looking at for $150 or less (just sold a Fisher ProCaliber mountain bike for $75) but unfortunately, my bikes are too small for you.

Keep looking and you'll find something worthwhile soon.

Bike Kitchen would be worth a try. It could also help you learn to work on bikes which will be a necessity if you do much riding.

there's a little shop up the street from me that has some used bikes at good prices. a while back they had a early 90's basso with 8 speed dura ace for $250 and a really clean bike (forgot the brand) with shimano 600 for $150. i'll check and see what they have now and post it here if they have anything worthwile.

I think a 56 would be just about right for a 'normal' 5'11" guy. Sure the geometry of the bike will be a player, but in general terms 56cm is just about right.

The last Craig's list bike you posted is about a 62cm bike. Wayyyyyyy to big, and a POS at that. Don't be so eager to buy the cheapest thing you can find.

The Fuji deal that is being offered to you is a really good one. You could ride that bike for years, it needs no work, it has a modern drivetrain, and it will actually have a little bit of a resale value after you put 20k miles on it. If you don't have enough for it, save some money up. I know that might mean actual labor and not instant gratification, but you'll get a lot better bike in the long run.

Wow that is a very good deal. It's very nice of you, Shnuddy to offer this up. Somebody should buy this bike!
