Road Bike Racing - i am too old and too rich to race

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

i have just realized that cycling is the most egotistical, money-oriented sport ever, and i help propogate it. i go everywhere riding my carbon fibre bike with my dimpled zipp 404's and srm cranks and powertap sl 2.4 wireless (redundancy is always good) acting as ambassador to the sport, even though i am a 45 year old no talent that will never be a pro (but i sure can ride on a pro level bike). instead of enjoying myself and competing against other cat 4's and 5's while simultaneoursly making myself healthier, i realize that my existence at races is not at all beneficial to the young guys that are racing in the 3's. that being the case, why should i ever ride my bike again? based on the above realization and the fact that electronic dura ace hasn't come out yet, i quit.
while i am whirling around in this pool of self loathing pool, i just wanted to go out of my way to make fun of those young racers out there. you guys suck. big time. you get coaches that take you to nationals, you get to go across the country racing. you are blessed with the youth to harness all of your potential talent. you are given the vast intrawebs to get advice on bike related stuff. you don't have a job or family that will take up most of your time. your bike has better shifting, better durability, and better performance than any bike that i ever started on (of course the technology improves because of us old guys buying up those afore mentioned zipps and powertaps). not to mention there is much more knowledge out there about effectively training then compared to when i was your age. still, you guys suck, except for ryanf and teh cypress who are pretty cool.

let me say this...I'm 23 years old...and I pretty much agree with you.
but then again, you need to accept the fact that there will always be someone younger and better than you, and technology will always be improving as well. don't fight it, you'll lose.

If I left my sense of humor in that last bourbon glass, I apologize.
If not, you need to upgrade from pampers.

Wait, this sport is money oriented? I'm racing on my 2nd road bike ever.
It's not the sport, it's the people. Nothing wrong with with buying the best stuff, but the sport doesn't require nearly as much money as you might see thrown at it.

I hear that!
Dude, when it comes to cycling it all boils down to you and your performance, not your damn bike.
BTW, base training is the best. That's where your homework gets done, not buying stuff you pro don't need.
Just ride, ride a lot.

this must be the long lost stupid twin to the "Screw it, i'm done game over" thread.
great...
You should have titled this thread "I quit too" or something.
As a 40 year old pack-fodder Cat 4 with a carbon bike, I now have also been appropriately shamed by the other thread, and I am also quitting. SOMEBODY DELETE MY ACCOUNT!!!!1!

Perhaps you need a set of Zipp 303's for climbing races, and 1080's for the TT's? I don't think it's possible to enjoy racing with only one set of PT Zipps, perhaps that's the reason for your downturn.
If you really want to help the sport, get the new Zipp PT disc wheels for your TT's. Then you'll earn the respect of all the young Cat 3's.

Problem with threads bumping up by last post is that historical context can get lost.
Hi,
I'm just old. That's why I'm not quitting. :)
