I'd like to remind everyone that the ride of silence is coming up May 21st, at 7:00 p.m at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. This is an extremely important event that affects all cyclists, regardless of club lines, regardless of fitness or skill level, and regardless of type of bike.
The Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.
In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed.
The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There is no brochure, no sponsors, no registration fees and no t-shirt. The ride, which is held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured.

My club is also doing their part with a Ride of Silence on May 21st starting in Thousand Oaks.
Details are below:
The local Thousand Oaks ride will organize in front of the CountryWide facility on Hillcrest at Wilbur, just to the west of Sears and the Janss Mall at 6:30pm on Wed. May 21st. There will be a brief program with words, directions and observance of this solemn occasion before our ride launch, at 7:00 pm.
Current route plans are to ride up Wilbur, down Moorpark Rd with a left onto Thousand Oaks Blvd headed east towards Westlake. We will ride east on T.O. Blvd in solemn silence at no more than 12 mph. This is not a race. This is not a demonstration. This is a procession. We will ride in front of Thousand Oaks City Hall and continue east on T.O. Blvd to a right at Lakeview Canyon. Lakeview will cross the freeway to Westlake and a right turn headed west on Agoura Rd through the center of Westlake Village. Our return will be a left at Willow Lane by Westlake Cyclery, the decent down Spectrum Hill, and a left onto T.O. Blvd in front of City Hall once again, and a slow solemn return to the starting point. Total route distance is 10.5 miles with no hills. Join us and get your neighbors to join us.
Bicycles and helmets are required of all. Lights, front and back are recommended. A firm commitment to ride at 12mph or less and to remain silent as best you can is required. This is a memorial procession for all the Glenn Garvin’s that we have known or have known of. Or for those of us who have been struck by cars or trucks for no other reason than the vehicle operator weren’t paying attention to the rules of the road.
Join with me in pulling this event together. May 21st is just around the corner. We only have two weeks. There is a lot to be done. I want to get 200+ bicycles in this silent procession down the main street of town in front of City Hall and return. Think of what a statement this will make. We need press coverage. These are our roads too. Same Roads, Same Rules, Same Rights.

Hi,
My club is still trying to decide which location suits our membership best. However, there will be a contingent of pink and blue at one of the rides.

Does this ride follow traffic laws or does it ignore them like critical mass? I might be at the Rose Bowl on the 21st.

Hi,
Yes, the group is supposed to follow all traffic laws. The LB ride last year worked that way but it was a very small (20 or so) group.

The Rose bowl chapter definitely follows all the rules. We simply do three laps of the Hippodrome around the Bowl and the golf course and there are no stop signs to run or anything. Last year there were about 130 of us and there should be some good numbers there again this year. It'll be a fun ride.

This is NOT a Critical Mass Ride.
What I suggest to organizers are:
1: Get local police to lead you on the route.
If not possible, then
2: Follow traffic laws, but remember;
3: You are a funeral procession for cyclists, stay together.
If lead riders need to stop at a stop sign or red light than stop. But once they proceed, everyone in the group / Ride stays with them.

Thanks Cleave and Markpedal. We shouldn't have any problems at the Rose Bowl since it is a continuous loop with no stops, but I wanted to know what type of cause I would be supporting. It turns out my brother-in-law is graduating that day, so I'll have to see if I get back home in time.

Hi,
Did the Fullerton Ride of Silence tonight. Turnout was kind of sparse and the route was on the short side. However, I am very glad that I did it. There was something like 15 riders, 5 of which were Lightning Velo members.
Our club may look into organizing or supporting the organization of a ride in Long Beach next year.

The Ride of Silence here in Thousand Oaks, CA had about 150 cyclists involved. Good crowd. I was interviewed beforehand by a couple of news agencies regarding my accident last year, etc.

I did the Irvine Ride on my fixed gear and there was about 100 riders, the police escorted us through all the lights, it was mostly non-stop for 10 miles. It was supposed to be rode in single file but most people were all over the place.

I did the ride at the Rose Bowl. We met a group of fellow BF members there. I would guess there were about 150 riders. Very nice ride.
