Since it is supposed to be a hot one this coming Saturday, and since I'm not doing Davis, how about a quick ride to the coast. I'm figuring OLH, 84, Pescadero, Stage, Hwy 1, Tunitas, Kings. Maybe we can meet at Pioneer Hotel, or the parking lot at the corner of 84 and Whiskey Hill? Anyone?

Where: Menlo Park Caltrain Station (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Menlo+Park+Caltrain+Station&sll=37.464348,-122.1981&sspn=0.011326,0.008562&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1). Meet at the clock tower. "Save the clock tower, save the clock tower".
When: 5/17/2008, 9 am
Distance: 60 miles
Elevation Gain: ~ 6000 feet ... hell, I don't know, just enjoy the ride

I'm up for it. However, I'll probably ride up the Coast side and meet you at Skyline or something.

Hmmm, we'll be riding just south of that route - we're starting in Los Altos, down to Redwood Gulch, through Big Basin, up Jamison Creek, Empire Grade, etc. and to the coast, then back via Gazos Creek/Pescadoro/Alpine. I may be a little grouchy after all that!

Hmmm, this sounds like a good ride. What kind of pace do you guys ride/climb? Looks to be about 50 miles with ??? climbing?

I need to know how painful this will be before I sign up:)

if someone's going to this from the south bay, shoot me a PM. I would love to go.

Or a ride from the closest Caltrain would be nice too.

Thanks

I just did this ride (plus San Mateo to Woodside -- started from home) on the tandem on Sunday. Nice ride :)

Ruth works Saturday, so I might be up for it on my single.

If it makes it easier for everyone, would Caltrain Menlo Park work best for everyone? That will make it convenient to get to.

Can we do an early start (8am?) and finish by noon? If not, no biggie but I'll have to pass.

Gonna have to miss this one. I'm going to be in Monterrey (not riding :().It's a shame because I've been wanting to do OLH again for a while. Have fun and get a nice tan in the heat.

Menlo Park Caltrain would make this very very easy for me.

I will have to check the calendar with the wife, but I am about 75% in for this :)

I'll ride up Tunitas Creek first and try to meet with you at OLH and Skyline. I figure I should plan to be there around 10:30?

If not, we can always meet at Pescadero while sandwiching.

Henry, if you want, I can split off with you at Woodside near the end of the ride and we can both ride north. I would ride with you until Skyline/Crystal Springs.

Get more miles in that way.

Let me know.

Hey Alan,
Dumb question, but will I need a windbreaker?

Hey Alan,
Dumb question, but will I need a windbreaker?

It's been warm last two days (high 70's low 80's), but you never know if the fog will come in. If it does, you're scrooowed if you don't have a windbreaker, especially on descents.

I think it's low probability you'll use it, but I'd bring one.

BTW - If I don't see you guys at the top of Skyline, I'll come down OLH until I see Marco (who will no doubt be first). Then I'll head up again with the group.

According to Caltrain, my train will arrive at about 8:30. Are there any coffee shops near the station where I can kill 30 mins?

Oh definitely ... I can't remember the name, but there is a book store, and a great cafe right next to it. There's also an Irish Pub there too. One time, we hung out there, and the Stanford band and cheerleaders were there ... it was too cool!

Edit: Cafe Borrone (http://www.cafeborrone.com/) .. great pastries.

We're riding the Monticello Century the day, so our ride on Sat. will be an easy spin. We'd like to do this ride another time...a cool coastal ride sounds good right now. I'm sorry we won't be there. :(

FYI,
We will probably wait till at least 9:10 am, just so that the folks coming from North of Menlo Park arrives on Caltrain. Northbound train leaves Menlo Park at the 34th minute of the hour, and southbound train leaves Menlo at the 59th minute of the hour.

Got home late last night (okay, early this morning), set the alarm for 5:30, went to sleep, woke up to the alarm, shut it off, and... fell back asleep. D'oh! :o

Have a good ride, everyone.
